About this item

After obtaining the Whetstone Knife, rest at a grace and choose Ashes of War. Select a compatible armament and the Ash you want to apply.

An armament has one active skill at a time. Applying a different Ash replaces that skill on the armament rather than giving it a second skill input.

Compatibility depends on the armament and the Ash. A skill available for a sword may not be available for fists, shields or ranged weapons.

In-game description

With a Whetstone Knife, you can use ashes of war to grant your armaments new skills at sites of grace.

An armament can only have one skill.

Any skill it previously had will be removed.

An armament's type determines what skills it can have. Some special armaments have unique skills and cannot be granted new ones.

Where to find

Whetstone Knife chest in Gatefront Ruins

Limgrave

Starting Site of Grace: Gatefront

  1. From the Church of Elleh, follow the road north to Gatefront Ruins.
  2. Search the southern part of the soldier camp for the stairwell descending underground. Clear nearby soldiers before opening your inventory.
  3. Go down and open the chest for Whetstone Knife and Ash of War: Storm Stomp.
  4. The Whetstone Knife pickup introduces the skill and affinity menus. The explanation is saved under Info.

Notes

  • After obtaining the Whetstone Knife, rest at a grace and choose Ashes of War. Select a compatible armament and the Ash you want to apply.
  • An armament has one active skill at a time. Applying a different Ash replaces that skill on the armament rather than giving it a second skill input.
  • Compatibility depends on the armament and the Ash. A skill available for a sword may not be available for fists, shields or ranged weapons.
  • Fixed unique skills cannot be replaced. Upgrading a weapon with Somber stones does not by itself explain every compatibility exception, so use the actual weapon's restrictions.
  • One owned Ash is assigned to one armament at a time. Lost Ashes of War can be used for duplication through Hewg when you want another copy.
