About this item

Block an attack, then promptly use a strong attack to perform a guard counter. The distinctive sound and counter animation confirm the input.

This is different from a parry. You first withstand the blocked hit, including its stamina cost and any chip damage, before answering with the counter.

Wait for the end of an enemy combo when possible. The counter does not make you invulnerable, and the next swing can interrupt you.

Where to find

Cave of Knowledge

Limgrave

Starting Site of Grace: Stranded Graveyard

  1. From Stranded Graveyard, approach the seated ghost beside the hole before the large exit lift. Drop into the hole and activate Cave of Knowledge grace.
  2. Follow the practice path through the enemies and read the introduction to guard counters when it appears. This explanation is awarded automatically, rather than picked up from a corpse.
  3. Continue through the Soldier of Godrick encounter to return to the upper graveyard. The Info tab keeps the tutorial available to read afterward.

Notes

  • Block an attack, then promptly use a strong attack to perform a guard counter. The distinctive sound and counter animation confirm the input.
  • This is different from a parry. You first withstand the blocked hit, including its stamina cost and any chip damage, before answering with the counter.
  • Wait for the end of an enemy combo when possible. The counter does not make you invulnerable, and the next swing can interrupt you.
  • Guard counters deal substantial stance damage. If the enemy collapses into a critical opening, move close to the appropriate point and use a light attack for the critical hit.
  • A shield is convenient, but a successful block with a suitable two-handed weapon can also lead to a guard counter.
