About this crafting material
Used for Rot Pots, Rot Grease, Drawstring Rot Grease and Rotbone ammunition. It is an ingredient, not a Scarlet Rot coating you can apply directly from the material inventory.
World butterfly clusters are finite for the journey. Resting, dying or raising Discovery does not refill a cluster you already gathered.
The Ainsel and Lake of Rot Basilisks can provide a renewable drop, with an 8% base chance at 100 Discovery. Ordinary Basilisks in other regions do not all drop butterflies.

In-game description
A butterfly with withered, scarlet wings found in the Swamp of Aeonia.
Material used for crafting items.
According to myth, these butterflies were once the wings of the Goddess of Rot herself.
Where to find
Butterfly clusters around Inner Aeonia
Caelid
Starting Site of Grace: Inner Aeonia
- From Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank, follow the road north through Sellia Gateway. Watch for the giant throwing rocks above the gateway. Gowry's wooden shack is off the road on the right, before the town.
- From the road west of Sellia, enter the Swamp of Aeonia and ride toward the pale dead branches surrounding its central clearing. Activate Inner Aeonia nearby; Commander O'Neil is not required just to gather material.
- Search south of Inner Aeonia and around the nearby ruins for the scarlet butterfly clusters. Collect them while mounted where possible and leave the rot water before healing.
- The gathered clusters do not return after resting. The enemy route below is for a renewable supply rather than a second pass over the same butterflies.
Basilisks along the southern shore
Lake of Rot
Starting Site of Grace: Grand Cloister
Before you go
- Reach Lake of Rot
- Start at Caria Manor in northwestern Liurnia. Defeat Royal Knight Loretta and enter Three Sisters behind the manor. Visit Ranni at the top of Ranni's Rise and agree to serve her. Speak to the spirits downstairs, then return to Ranni to finish the conversation.
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle. Return to southern Mistwood and find the new crater near Fort Haight, marked by floating rocks. Descend using its ledges and enter Nokron, Eternal City.
- Work across Nokron's rooftops to the streets and continue to Mimic Tear. Defeat it and cross the long bridge beyond its arena. Leave the bridge on the left into the woods, then follow the cliff to Ancestral Woods grace.
- Jump from the cliff beside that grace onto the roof below. Follow the rooftops and narrow building ledges into Night's Sacred Ground. Continue across the broken stone arch into the church, descend inside, and leave onto the lower street. Follow that street to the enormous seated figure and open the chest underneath it for Fingerslayer Blade.
- Return the blade to Ranni at her tower. Before doing this, finish any remaining Seluvis rewards you want. Rest after speaking to Ranni, then visit Renna's Rise, the northern tower in Three Sisters. Climb it and use the sending gate to Ainsel River Main.
- Collect Miniature Ranni from the coffin near where you arrive. Rest at Ainsel River Main and select Talk to miniature Ranni repeatedly until she answers. Finish her dialogue.
- Follow the river through Uhl Palace Ruins, using cover against the hanging creature's projectiles. Continue through the ant tunnel to Nokstella. Follow the river at ground level through the city and take the lift in the small building at the far end to Nokstella Waterfall Basin.
- Continue beyond Nokstella Waterfall Basin through the red-lit cavern to the lift down to Lake of Rot. Activate Lake of Rot Shoreside before entering the water. Astel and Dark Moon Ring are not required.
- From the shore, look southwest for the first small obelisk. Run to its floor button to raise dry platforms, then continue south across them. Watch for Basilisks emerging beside the path.
- From the southwestern end of those platforms, cross to the next obelisk southwest and press its button. Stop on dry ground to treat Scarlet Rot or restore HP before continuing.
- Look toward the enormous doorway on the lake's southern side. Cross the remaining stretches toward that entrance, using exposed stone for breaks. Avoid rolling in the rot, which coats you and keeps buildup going after you leave it.
- Enter the large doorway and follow the stairs down to Grand Cloister grace. Activate it before returning for nearby lake loot. The Dragonkin Soldier and the raised Alabaster Lord area are optional detours.
- From Grand Cloister, return up the entrance stairs to the lake. Follow the southern shore east toward the southeastern ruined building and its broken pillars, stopping on exposed stone to clear Scarlet Rot.
- Defeat the Basilisks around those southern and southeastern ruins. Avoid their Death Blight clouds as well as the lake's rot, collect glowing drops and return to the cloister grace to reset them.
- These lake Basilisks have an 8% base butterfly drop chance at 100 Discovery. Ordinary Basilisks in unrelated dungeons do not all share that drop.
Merchant east of Astray from Caelid Highway North
Caelid
Starting Site of Grace: Astray from Caelid Highway North
Before you go
- Have 1,500 runes per item.
- Find Astray from Caelid Highway North grace on the western side of the Swamp of Aeonia.
- Head east toward the cliff overlooking the swamp. Look near the sword monument and collapsed blighted tree for the merchant's camp.
- Buy up to five Aeonian Butterflies for 1,500 runes each. Resting does not refill this stock.
Notes
- Used for Rot Pots, Rot Grease, Drawstring Rot Grease and Rotbone ammunition. It is an ingredient, not a Scarlet Rot coating you can apply directly from the material inventory.
- World butterfly clusters are finite for the journey. Resting, dying or raising Discovery does not refill a cluster you already gathered.
- The Ainsel and Lake of Rot Basilisks can provide a renewable drop, with an 8% base chance at 100 Discovery. Ordinary Basilisks in other regions do not all drop butterflies.
- Kindred of Rot can also drop them. The selected lake Basilisks offer a different fight, but their Death Blight clouds and the rot water make the route hazardous.
- The merchant east of Astray from Caelid Highway North sells five for 1,500 runes each. Buying the stock or offering his bearing does not turn it into an unlimited supply.
- One butterfly makes one Rot Pot or one ordinary or drawstring Rot Grease. One butterfly makes ten Rotbone Arrows, fletched arrows or bolts per craft, so ammunition stretches a limited stack further.
- The recipe still needs its other ingredients and cookbook. A renewable butterfly farm does not supply the containers, resin or bones required by the finished item.
