Before you go
Visit at night.
Rest at Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank and pass time until nightfall. Head southeast onto the open ground outside the swamp.
Approach the Death Rite Bird's area and defeat it to receive Death's Poker. If the bird is absent, check that it is night and that you have not already defeated it in this playthrough.
The fight is on dry land southeast of the swamp-bank grace, rather than inside Commander O'Neil's root-covered central arena. Check the enemy name: this is a Death Rite Bird, not one of the ordinary Deathbirds in other regions.

Notes
This bird gives Death’s Poker. You receive the weapon automatically; there is no chest or dragon-altar exchange afterward.
Pass time until night and approach the dry area southeast of Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank. Commander O’Neil’s central swamp arena is a different location.
Keep the fight on open dry ground where you can see the ghostflame trails. Retreating into the swamp adds another problem without ending the bird’s ranged attacks.
Holy damage and anti-undead effects are useful against this bird. A Holy Water Pot is a different tool from an ordinary Fire Pot, even though both use a throwing container.
The pale flames left on the ground continue to hurt after the initial swing and build Frostbite. Move onto clear ground before trying to heal or cast a slow spell.
The hovering wing attacks can leave tracking projectiles active while the bird starts another move. Keep watching those projectiles after the bird’s animation changes.
When it prepares the large ghostflame burst, create space and look for a clear path between the trails afterward. Dodging the first blast does not remove the fire left behind.
Fighting directly under the head risks pecks, a grab and awkward camera movement. Circle toward its rear when possible, while still watching for the next repositioning attack.
