Death Rite Bird (Frozen river southeast of Apostate Derelict)

This Death Rite Bird combines sweeping weapon attacks with ghostflame, Frostbite and delayed ranged attacks. Watch the ground as carefully as the bird itself.

Before you go

Use both Haligtree Secret Medallion halves at the Grand Lift of Rold.
Visit the northern riverbank at night.

Obtain the right half from Albus, disguised as a pot uphill from Village of the Albinaurics grace beneath Liurnia's western plateau. Obtain the left half from the tower rooftop beyond Commander Niall at Castle Sol.
Return to the Grand Lift of Rold, stand at the medallion prompt and switch actions to Hoist secret medallion. The ordinary Hoist medallion action leads to a different region.
In Hidden Path to the Haligtree, follow the main corridor and take the steps on the left up through the Militia and Land Octopus enemies. Stay on the normal walkway; dropping through the broken railing starts an optional lower dungeon.
Activate Hidden Path to the Haligtree grace near the exit and continue outside. The lower Stray Mimic Tear boss is unnecessary for the snowfield.
Travel north through the blizzard, following the road and its lights rather than riding toward the cliff edges. Activate Consecrated Snowfield and continue toward Inner Consecrated Snowfield as visibility improves.
Once visibility improves near Inner Consecrated Snowfield, rest and set the time to night. Follow the frozen river northwest toward the Apostate Derelict approach, staying on its northern side.
Approach the open riverbank northwest of Ordina to make the Death Rite Bird appear. Defeat it for Explosive Ghostflame. The town's evergaol puzzle and the Haligtree are unnecessary for this fight.
After a failed attempt, set the time to night again at a grace before returning. The bird in the Mountaintops south of Castle Sol is a different encounter and gives Death Ritual Spear instead.

Notes

Defeat this bird for Explosive Ghostflame. The Mountaintops bird gives Death Ritual Spear instead.
It appears at night near the western end of the frozen river. Reset the time before returning after a failed attempt.
The Haligtree Secret Medallion opens the snowfield route. You do not need to finish Ordina’s evergaol or defeat Malenia to reach this river.
Holy damage and anti-undead effects are useful against this bird. A Holy Water Pot is a different tool from an ordinary Fire Pot, even though both use a throwing container.
The pale flames left on the ground continue to hurt after the initial swing and build Frostbite. Move onto clear ground before trying to heal or cast a slow spell.
The hovering wing attacks can leave tracking projectiles active while the bird starts another move. Keep watching those projectiles after the bird’s animation changes.
When it prepares the large ghostflame burst, create space and look for a clear path between the trails afterward. Dodging the first blast does not remove the fire left behind.
Fighting directly under the head risks pecks, a grab and awkward camera movement. Circle toward its rear when possible, while still watching for the next repositioning attack.
