Quest steps

Quest steps can include different outcomes. Read the branch, conditions and cutoffs before making a choice.

  1. Spare his surrender

    Branch: Main quest

Damage him until he gives up, then stop attacking. Speak to him and reload the cave to open his shop.

  2. Optional chest trick

    Branch: Optional tricks

Open his later chest to be sent to Mistwood. Rest at a grace to restore fast travel, then return and speak to him for the related gesture.

  3. Optional later meetings

    Branch: Optional tricks

Speak at Scenic Isle about Rya and the academy Abductor Virgin. On Mt. Gelmir, following his Glowstones near the cliff triggers another trick. These scenes are not required for the manor reward.

  4. Take his contract

    Branch: Main quest

After Tanith’s first contract, ask Patches for his letter. Defeat Magma Wyrm Makar and use Tragoth’s red sign inside the cleared arena. Killing Tragoth prevents his later cooperation.

  5. Ask for the promised reward

    Branch: Main quest

Report Tragoth’s defeat, rest and speak to Patches again about your reward. Do this before killing Rykard.

  6. The castanets

    Branch: Main quest

After Rykard, finish his manor dialogue and find him before Elemer’s room in Shaded Castle. Receive Dancer’s Castanets. You can offer them to Tanith beside Rykard’s remains.

  7. Return to the cave

    Branch: Main quest

Reload after the Shaded Castle meeting and return to Murkwater Cave. Open the chest, then stop when Patches recognizes you. Finish talking and reload to restore his shop.

  8. Optional second surrender

    Branch: Optional gesture

After befriending him, attacking enough to restart hostility opens a separate surrender interaction when he lowers your health. He teaches Extreme Repentance; perform it when he demands surrender. This is optional and risks losing the merchant if you kill him.

Rewards and conditions

Reward or serviceConditionDetails
Grovel for MercyLet him surrender during the first cave fight.Stop attacking and finish the peaceful conversation.
Magma Whip CandlestickReturn after Tragoth’s contract and ask about the reward.Bull-Goat Set comes directly from Tragoth’s invasion, separately from this whip.
Dancer’s CastanetsSpeak at Shaded Castle after his manor departure.Giving them to Tanith has no further equipment reward.
Patches’ CrouchLet him recognize you during the final Murkwater encounter.Do not kill him during the brief renewed fight.
Leather Set, Spear +7 and Patches’ Bell BearingKill Patches instead. This ends his remaining quests and gestures.
Calm Down!Return and speak after his chest trap or the Mt. Gelmir cliff trick. These are alternative opportunities for the same gesture.
Extreme RepentanceMake the friendly Patches hostile again and let him bring your health low enough for his surrender demand.Use the newly received gesture when prompted to make peace. Avoid killing him if preserving his later quest.

Notes

  • His shop sells Margit’s Shackle and other supplies. Leaving him alive preserves his later assignment.
  • The chest trap and the cliff kick can be skipped without losing Magma Whip Candlestick.
  • The Abductor Virgin route needs its grab to kill you. It reaches an underground area of the manor, not Tanith’s safe reception room.
  • Do not mistake a surrender for a request to finish him off.
  • Tragoth’s red sign appears in Makar’s arena after the boss is dead. His gold cooperation sign is a different interaction.
