About this upgrade material

One stone upgrades a compatible special armament from +5 to +6, plus the blacksmith's rune fee. Each Somber rank uses one stone rather than the ordinary path's 2, 4 and 6 pattern.

Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [3] from First Church of Marika unlocks unlimited purchases at 12,000 runes each from the Twin Maiden Husks.

This rank's unlimited supply comes from its bearing rather than Iji's early Somber stock. The bearing can be handed in without collecting the earlier numbered bearings first.

First Church of Marika bell-bearing unlock

Mountaintops of the Giants

Starting Site of Grace: Freezing Lake

Before you go

  • Reach the Mountaintops of the Giants.
  1. Reach the Mountaintops through the Grand Lift of Rold, then follow the northern valley to Freezing Lake.
  2. Ride along the frozen lake toward the ruined First Church of Marika on its southern shore. Keep moving if Borealis appears; defeating the dragon is not required.
  3. Activate the church grace and loot the corpse just outside the church for Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [3]. The item beneath the church statue is a separate flask upgrade.
  4. Give the bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to buy these stones without a stock limit. Buy Somber Smithing Stone [6] for 12,000 runes each.

Notes

  • One stone upgrades a compatible special armament from +5 to +6, plus the blacksmith's rune fee. Each Somber rank uses one stone rather than the ordinary path's 2, 4 and 6 pattern.
  • Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [3] from First Church of Marika unlocks unlimited purchases at 12,000 runes each from the Twin Maiden Husks.
  • This rank's unlimited supply comes from its bearing rather than Iji's early Somber stock. The bearing can be handed in without collecting the earlier numbered bearings first.
  • Ordinary Smithing Stones with the same number are not substitutes. The material family is set by the weapon's upgrade path, rather than whether you like its skill or appearance.
  • The earlier Somber upgrades must be completed in order. Finding a high rank early does not let you jump directly from +0 to that reinforcement level.
  • The handed-in Somberstone bearing preserves its upgrade-material shop in later Journeys. Fixed world pickups remain one-time collections within the current Journey.
