Speak to Thops inside. Offer the small donation if you want to open his early sorcery shop.

Starting Site of Grace: Debate Parlor

Get your own Academy Glintstone Key from behind Glintstone Dragon Smarag, on the small island west of the academy. You can pick it up without killing the dragon. Use the key at the academy's sealed entrance and progress to the Red Wolf of Radagon. Defeat it to unlock the Debate Parlor Site of Grace.
For your first visit, start at Debate Parlor and enter the courtyard. Go left up the broken stone slope and the stairs past the sorcerers. Jump over the left railing, climb the lower stairway, then jump the next left railing onto the roofs.
Follow the roofs south past two marionettes and climb the ladder. Cross the high walkway past the flying marionettes and sorcerer, then follow the ledge around the right side of the tower and drop onto the next roof.
Keep descending the roofs toward the marionette archers. Use the lower ledge beside their tower, then follow it around to the ladder facing the large Church of the Cuckoo roof. Jump across to that roof instead of climbing the ladder.
Enter an open church window onto the rafters. Drop onto the lower beam and the chandelier carrying the spare Academy Glintstone Key, then onto the upper walkway. Do not drop all the way to the floor.

Starting Site of Grace: Schoolhouse Classroom

Give Thops the spare key and finish his dialogue, then rest or reload.
Travel to Schoolhouse Classroom, leave through the western archway and turn right around the outside wall. Search Thops at the desk.

Quest steps can include different outcomes. Read the branch, conditions and cutoffs before making a choice.

Speak at Church of Irith. He wants an Academy Glintstone Key, but refuses to take the first one you need yourself.
Enter the academy
Branch: Main quest
Collect your first key behind Smarag on the lake island west of Raya Lucaria. You can take it without killing the dragon. Use it at the sealed entrance.
Find the spare key
Branch: Main quest
Defeat Red Wolf of Radagon, then use Debate Parlor’s courtyard stairs and roof route to reach the Church of the Cuckoo rafters. Drop onto the chandelier holding the spare key.
Give the spare key
Branch: Main quest
Return to Church of Irith, hand the spare to Thops and finish speaking for Erudition. This commits his return to the academy.
Collect his final items
Branch: Main quest
After reloading, find him at the desk outside Schoolhouse Classroom. Collect Academy Glintstone Staff, the Thops’s Barrier sorcery and his Bell Bearing.
Check the old church
Branch: Main quest
Return to Church of Irith after he leaves. The scarab that appears there provides the separate Thops’s Barrier Ash of War.

Rennala does not need to be defeated to reach the spare-key chandelier. Red Wolf of Radagon blocks the normal roof approach.
The first key and the spare key are two pickups with different purposes. Do not search for another copy behind Smarag.
His return has a scripted death. Keeping him at the church preserves his presence but does not award the completed quest items.
Erudition is the handover reward; killing him for a bearing does not replace that conversation.
The classroom desk is outside the grace room. Check around the wall rather than searching the indoor rows of scholars.
