Before you go

Reach Altus Plateau.

Reach Altus Plateau by the Grand Lift of Dectus or Ruin-Strewn Precipice, then follow the eastern highway to Altus Highway Junction. Take the broad northeastern road and climb the great staircase toward the capital walls.
Follow the main road northeast toward Leyndell. At the large southern gate into the Capital Outskirts, two mounted Tree Sentinels guard the entrance.
Ride past them if you want to activate Outer Wall Phantom Tree first. Return toward the gate and draw one sentinel away so you can fight them separately.
Defeat both Tree Sentinels to receive Erdtree Greatshield. The single Tree Sentinel near the start of Limgrave has a different reward.

Notes

Defeat both to receive Erdtree Greatshield. It is not a reward for killing only the Limgrave Sentinel.
You can ride past the pair and activate Outer Wall Phantom Tree first, giving yourself a nearby recovery point.
Draw one rider away from the other instead of opening the fight between them.
One uses a torch while the other carries a shield. Watch the actual weapon setup before assuming the same close-range response.
Keep clear of the horse and wide halberd sweeps while healing. A rider facing a different direction can turn quickly.
The Draconic Tree Sentinel guarding Leyndell’s northeastern entrance is a separate fight.
