LocationForest Lookout Tower

Weeping Peninsula

Starting Site of Grace: South of the Lookout Tower

  1. Cross Bridge of Sacrifice from southern Limgrave. Follow the road south past the wrecked caravan and reach its fork before Castle Morne Rampart.
  2. Take the uphill northern fork instead of continuing south toward the castle. Pass the pond and activate South of the Lookout Tower on the rock beside the road.
  3. Ride northeast up the wooded hill, then turn northwest toward Forest Lookout Tower. Avoid the Poison Flowers and clear the dogs and soldiers around its base.
  4. Climb the wall on the northwest side and enter past the soldier throwing Fire Pots. Climb the ladders to the summit, clear the ballista operator and open the chest for Hand Ballista.

Notes

  • It has no attribute damage scaling. Extra Strength does not directly improve its damage once the weapon's requirements are satisfied.
  • The listed requirements are 30 Strength and 14 Dexterity. Two-handing supplies the Strength requirement with 20 actual Strength, but you still need 14 actual Dexterity.
  • It fires greatbolts only. Ordinary crossbow bolts and greatarrows are different ammunition and cannot be loaded into it.
  • It weighs 10, lighter than the 15-weight Jar Cannon, and uses ordinary Smithing Stones rather than Somber stones.
  • Kick is fixed, with no replacement Ash of War or grease buff. Upgrade the ballista with Smithing Stones, up to +25.
  • It must be used in both hands. The lower effective Strength requirement comes from that two-handed use, rather than permission to fire it one-handed with another weapon.
  • Ballista Bolts deal Physical damage. Explosive and Lightning Greatbolts provide other ways to pressure a group or a position, but firing still leaves the same slow reload opening.
  • Greatbolt impacts can knock smaller enemies down. Terrain, distance and the enemy's size still matter; a hit is not a guaranteed knockdown against every boss.
  • The chest at the tower summit guarantees the ballista. The soldier using the mounted emplacement does not have to drop it randomly.
