In-game description

A stone mask twisted into an expression of rapturous grief.

Use while disrobed to transform into a lamenter.

The change cannot be undone except by death.

Using this mask while already transformed causes the head to swell in size.

This transformation tallies with the state of a denizen of paradise, but the people of the tower denied and hid it from the world. In their foolishness, they viewed true bliss with deep fear.

Where to find

Lamenter at the bottom of Lamenter's Gaol

Charo's Hidden Grave

Starting Site of Grace: Lamenter's Gaol

Before you go

  • Enter the Realm of Shadow.
  1. From Castle Front, follow the road southeast toward Pillar Path Waypoint. At the fork, use the lower road toward Igon rather than climbing to the Suppressing Pillar.
  2. Continue south-southwest past the broken dragon statues. An Ancient Dragon-Man invades along this approach. The cave entrance is on the left near the end of the path, marked by a fire.
  3. Activate Dragon's Pit grace and follow the lit passage down. Watch for skeletons below the first ledge and around the next corner. Strike their glowing remains after knocking them down to stop them getting back up.
  4. In the large cavern with the pillars, follow the left-hand ledge down and take the passage beside the distant crossbow skeleton. Continue onto the sloping stairs in the next chamber.
  5. Take the downward route toward the large altar and pit. The stairs going up lead to an optional Magma Wyrm; that fight is not needed to reach the exit.
  6. At the bottom, approach the message beside the deep chasm. Walk straight off this lowest ledge into the pit to land safely by the boss mist. Do not jump from the higher rooms or aim toward the side walls.
  7. Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man behind the mist. Open the large doors at the back of the arena instead of using the return-to-entrance exit, then follow the tunnel to Dragon's Pit Terminus grace.
  8. Leave Dragon's Pit Terminus and descend to the lake bed with a Jagged Peak Drake. You can ride past the drake; follow the southern canyon toward the enormous dead dragon.
  9. Pass the dragon statues and emerge beside the ruined structure north of Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. The huge stone bowl and dead dragon identify the altar.
  10. At the altar, head west over the dead dragon and continue west-southwest toward the red flowers. This leads into the upper hidden grave, not the blue-flowered coast below.
  11. The entrance meets the lowest section of a shallow river. The river climbs northwest through several pools separated by small waterfalls.
  12. Continue northwest up the river past the Mariner pools. At the upper end, follow the red-flowered trail on the western bank to Charo's Hidden Grave grace.
  13. From Charo's Hidden Grave, continue northwest through the red-flowered graveyard toward the cliff entrance of Lamenter's Gaol. Enter and activate its grace.
  14. Inside the gaol, take the left branch at the first fork. Search the second cell on the right and open its chest for Gaol Upper Level Key.
  15. Return to the locked door at the fork, open it and descend the ladder. In the icy room below, take the hole on the right down into the rat caves.
  16. Follow the right branch through the rats to the ladder, climb back to the icy room and take the eastern icy slope. The next room's floor collapses into the bottom level.
  17. Leave the fallen room, climb the stairs and follow the cell passage across the small gap to the jar room. Open the chest there for Gaol Lower Level Key.
  18. Backtrack across the gap and continue through the door at the top of the stairs. Follow the path to the lower locked door, use the key and descend the ladder to the boss.
  19. Defeat Lamenter to receive the mask.

Notes

  • Remove all armor before transforming. The form lasts until death and prevents wearing armor; resting does not change you back.
  • Adds 8 Arcane. It gives 5% reduction against Physical, Magic, Fire and Lightning damage, and 20% against Holy damage; the Holy figure is not another 20% added on top of the 5%.
  • Adds 30 to Immunity, Robustness and Vitality, but lowers Focus by 50. The lower Focus makes Sleep and Madness easier to trigger against you.
  • Crimson Flask healing is reduced by 9%. Extra Arcane does not remove that drawback, and the transformation supplies no armor poise.
  • Use the mask again while transformed to swell the head and attack. This costs no FP, deals Physical damage and scales with Strength, rather than using the extra Arcane as its attack attribute.
  • The head attack gives 10 stance damage. The tool is reusable, so it does not consume a new mask on every attack.
  • The mask does not give you all of the boss's disappearing and clone abilities. Lamenting Visage is the separate lantern with its own stealth skill.
  • Weapons and talismans remain usable in the form. Choosing it gives up ordinary armor defenses and poise even if the extra Arcane helps your equipped weapon or spell.
  • Lamenter at the end of the gaol gives the mask. The lower hidden cell contains Lamenting Visage and is not the mask pickup.
  • The forms from Rock Heart and Priestess Heart are mutually exclusive with this transformation. Death clears the current form before choosing another.
