Effects
Equip it in a talisman slot before dying. A twig carried in your inventory without being equipped does not protect your runes.
On an ordinary death, the equipped twig is destroyed instead of dropping your carried runes. Each twig protects one death and must be replaced afterward.
That protected death does not create a replacement rune bloodstain. This can also preserve an older pile of dropped runes while you are trying to reach it again.

In-game description
A talisman fashioned from a dried twig, so slender that it might snap at the slightest touch.
Prevents rune loss upon death, but will be lost itself in exchange.
Believed to be a twig pruned from the Erdtree long, long ago.
Where to find
Isolated Merchant's Shack
Weeping Peninsula
Starting Site of Grace: Isolated Merchant's Shack
Before you go
- Travel to the western side of the Weeping Peninsula and follow the coast toward Isolated Merchant's Shack.
- Speak to the merchant and buy a Sacrificial Twig for 3,000 runes. He has three in stock.
Patches's shop
Limgrave / Mt. Gelmir
Starting Site of Grace: Murkwater Cave
Before you go
- Enter Murkwater Cave in the ravine north of Agheel Lake. Fight Patches until he surrenders and spare him.
- Return after resting to open his shop and buy the twig for 5,000 runes. If he has moved, check his current shop location, including Volcano Manor.
- If Patches is dead, give his bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks to access the remaining unlocked stock.
Gravestone west of Mistwood Ruins
Limgrave
- Approach the cliff west of Mistwood Ruins, northeast of Waypoint Ruins.
- Find the large gravestone overlooking Mistwood and loot the body in front of it.
Edgar's first conversation in Castle Morne
Weeping Peninsula
Starting Site of Grace: Castle Morne Lift
- Enter Castle Morne and use its ladder and battlement route to reach Edgar's seat on the upper walls.
- Speak to him for the first time and finish the conversation to receive a twig. You do not need to defeat Leonine Misbegotten for this initial gift.
Cliff ledge below Malefactor's Evergaol
Liurnia of the Lakes
- Reach the long elevated southern Liurnia landmass containing Malefactor's Evergaol.
- Look below the cliff for the projecting stone ledge with a seated corpse. Use the intermediate ledges to approach it, then loot the twig.
Enemy-camp chest northwest of the highway junction
Altus Plateau
Starting Site of Grace: Altus Highway Junction
- Travel northwest from Altus Highway Junction into the nearby enemy camp.
- Clear the guards around the chest and open it to collect a twig.
Fia's conversation about Rogier
Roundtable Hold
Starting Site of Grace: Table of Lost Grace
- Progress Rogier's conversations and speak to Fia at Roundtable Hold.
- Accept her embrace and continue the private conversation about Rogier when available to receive a twig.
Lesser Wormface drops
Altus Plateau / Crumbling Farum Azula
- Find Lesser Wormfaces around Altus Plateau's Minor Erdtree or in the lower southern part of Farum Azula.
- Defeat them and check their drops. Rest and repeat if you need more; a twig is a rare drop rather than a guaranteed reward.
Notes
- Equip it in a talisman slot before dying. A twig carried in your inventory without being equipped does not protect your runes.
- On an ordinary death, the equipped twig is destroyed instead of dropping your carried runes. Each twig protects one death and must be replaced afterward.
- That protected death does not create a replacement rune bloodstain. This can also preserve an older pile of dropped runes while you are trying to reach it again.
- Death Blight bypasses the protection and does not consume the twig. Do not rely on it to preserve a rune recovery attempt through Wormfaces or Basilisks.
- It does not prevent the death itself, remove the trip back or restore runes already permanently lost before equipping it.
- Twiggy Cracked Tear offers a temporary alternative through the Flask of Wondrous Physick. A twig instead remains equipped until consumed by a qualifying death or removed.
- Merchant stocks, quest gifts and corpse pickups provide individual twigs. Lesser Wormfaces can also drop them, but their random drop is not guaranteed on each kill.
- Death Blight is an instant-death status, rather than ordinary damage. A twig is not protection against that exception even if you still have a previous rune pile waiting to be recovered.
