In-game description
Weapon of Sir Ansbach.
A longbow consisting of two bow bodies and two strings.
Unusually for a longbow, it can be wielded similarly to a light bow—provided that the wielder has the extraordinary dexterity demanded.

Before you go
- To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
- Progress Ansbach's quest and keep him alive until his confrontation with Leda in the Storehouse.
- Do not resolve Leda's earlier confrontation by helping Hornsent against her if you want this bow.
- Enter the Realm of Shadow after defeating Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, by touching the withered arm in Mohg's arena. From Three-Path Cross, follow the western road toward Belurat and speak to Ansbach at Main Gate Cross.
- After the message that Miquella's great rune and charm have broken, return to Ansbach and finish his new dialogue. He moves to the Specimen Storehouse in Shadow Keep.
- From Highroad Cross in Scadu Altus, follow the main road north to Shadow Keep's southern gate. Ride the entrance lift and activate Shadow Keep Main Gate grace.
- Defeat Golden Hippopotamus in the plaza. This is the front-door route; the flooded Church District provides a different way into the keep.
- From Main Gate Plaza, leave through the west-northwest doorway, pass through the armory and climb the stairs. Continue up the wooden steps to the dining hall, where two Black Knights guard the route.
- Leave the dining hall through its southeastern exit to the upper rampart. Follow the rampart past the burning boats and watch for the small Shadow Militiamen hiding beside them.
- Take the stairs leading north-northeast toward the large lift, passing the Fire Knight in front of it. Ride up and activate Storehouse, First Floor grace.
- At Storehouse, First Floor, take the stairs beside the central specimen and follow the shelves north. Before climbing farther, take the right-hand passage down to the room with the altar and skeletons. Finish Ansbach's dialogue in its corner.
- Before giving him Secret Rite Scroll, speak to Freyja on Storehouse, Seventh Floor if you want her shield reward too. Her investigation supplies a conversation option with Ansbach that can be missed if he leaves first.
- Return upstairs and follow the shelf-lined walkways up the next two levels. Watch for Shadow Militiamen beside the stairs and the Fire Knight on the third-floor walkway.
- Continue southwest past that Fire Knight to the walkway corner where more militiamen approach. Find the large feet of the suspended specimen, climb onto it and follow its body upward.
- Jump from the specimen's horns onto the balcony with the cross and activate Storehouse, Fourth Floor grace. The ordinary stair route does not directly replace this climb.
- Leave the fourth-floor grace through the western doorway. Follow the outer balcony south, climb past the Fire Knight casting from the next stairs and continue east.
- Before continuing up toward the next Storehouse entrance, take the stairs down on the left near the bats. Enter the lower room and collect Secret Rite Scroll beside the shelves at the far edge.
- Return to Ansbach, discuss Freyja if following her quest, then give him Secret Rite Scroll and finish his investigation dialogue. Handle Letter for Freyja now if he offers it.
- Speak to Leda at Highroad Cross as she chooses her targets. For the later Ansbach encounter, either help Leda against Hornsent at the Shadow Keep signs or leave that earlier confrontation unresolved and challenge Messmer. Helping Hornsent defeat Leda prevents the later bow confrontation.
- Return to Leda after the earlier branch and finish her dialogue about Ansbach. Go back to his former Storehouse room and find the two summon signs. Complete this before burning the sealing tree behind Romina.
- Use the gold sign to help Ansbach defeat Leda. After winning, speak to him for Ansbach's Longbow and Leda's Rune, while preserving his later quest rewards.
- The red sign instead helps Leda kill Ansbach and also awards the bow. That branch ends his quest and loses his later allied role and final rewards. Decide before entering the encounter.
Notes
- Requires 9 Strength and 43 Dexterity and weighs 4.5. Dexterity has the stronger physical scaling, but Strength is only moderately weaker. A balanced higher-level build can gain useful damage from both rather than the 43 Dexterity requirement making Strength irrelevant.
- Despite being a longbow, it uses the quick light-bow movements on foot, including jumping and rolling shots. This makes it easier to keep firing between dodges than a conventional stationary longbow.
- Fan Shot costs 12 FP and consumes eight arrows for one spread. Entering its ready stance costs no FP; each fired spread spends the FP and ammunition.
- The spread does not give eight independent full hits against one enemy. A target can receive at most two contacts from it, making the wide coverage useful against movement or a group rather than guaranteeing eightfold status buildup.
- Normal shots still use ordinary arrows, not greatarrows or bolts. Select ammunition for the target's defense and status resistance, and carry enough if you plan to use Fan Shot repeatedly.
- Shard of Alexander improves the skill's damage rather than every ordinary arrow. Arrow damage and range talismans support their respective effects, while Godfrey Icon gives no bonus to Fan Shot.
- Upgrade with Somber Smithing Stones to +10. Fan Shot and the affinity are fixed, and grease or a weapon enchantment cannot be applied.
- The Storehouse confrontation awards the bow on either side. Helping Ansbach preserves his later quest, while helping Leda kills him. Helping Hornsent against Leda earlier blocks this particular bow opportunity, so obtain Swift Slash on a different journey if you want both branch rewards.
- Finish the Storehouse encounter before burning the sealing tree. Killing Ansbach directly is another way to obtain the bow, but also ends his dialogue, ally role and later quest rewards.
