About this Ash of War
Costs 12 FP and lasts ten seconds. Small, medium and thrusting shields spend 50% less stamina on blocks; greatshields spend 30% less. This reduces the stamina left after the shield's own Guard Boost is accounted for.
With Greatshield Talisman, the combined reduction is 60% for the smaller shield classes or 44% for greatshields. These effects multiply the remaining stamina loss rather than adding points to Guard Boost.
Its increased hardness makes many ordinary one-handed blows rebound. Whips, Cipher Pata, Coded Sword, jumping attacks and many large enemy attacks are exceptions, so do not expect every hit to bounce.

In-game description
This Ash of War grants no affinity to an armament, but imparts the following skill:
"Barricade Shield: Skill made famous by Sir Neidhardt. Focus your energy into the shield, temporarily hardening it to deflect greater blows."
Usable on all shields.
Where to find
Night's Cavalry near Castle Morne Rampart
Weeping Peninsula
Starting Site of Grace: Castle Morne Rampart
Before you go
- Fight the Night's Cavalry at night.
- Cross the Bridge of Sacrifice and follow the main road south through the Weeping Peninsula to Castle Morne Rampart.
- Rest at the grace and pass time until night. Look along the road beside the rampart for the black rider.
- Defeat this Night's Cavalry to receive the Ash. If you die and return during daylight, pass time until night again.
- The nearby tower holds the Great Turtle Shell, which has the skill built in. That shield pickup is separate from this transferable Ash.
Notes
- Costs 12 FP and lasts ten seconds. Small, medium and thrusting shields spend 50% less stamina on blocks; greatshields spend 30% less. This reduces the stamina left after the shield's own Guard Boost is accounted for.
- With Greatshield Talisman, the combined reduction is 60% for the smaller shield classes or 44% for greatshields. These effects multiply the remaining stamina loss rather than adding points to Guard Boost.
- Its increased hardness makes many ordinary one-handed blows rebound. Whips, Cipher Pata, Coded Sword, jumping attacks and many large enemy attacks are exceptions, so do not expect every hit to bounce.
- Activation raises the guard immediately. You can use it while already guarding, but need a gap in the brief stun after a blocked hit to refresh it.
- It does not improve the shield's listed damage-blocking percentages. A shield that lets Physical or elemental damage through still does so with this buff.
- Shield Grease and Scholar's Shield replace this coating rather than combining with it. Their longer duration can suit longer fights, while Barricade is quicker to activate.
- The Night's Cavalry near Castle Morne Rampart awards the transferable Ash at night. Great Turtle Shell has the skill built in, but collecting the shell does not also give this Ash.
- Compatible weapon classes: Small Shield, Medium Shield, Greatshield, Thrusting Shield. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
- Its default affinity is Standard. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Fire, Flame Art, Lightning, Sacred, Magic, Cold, Poison, Blood and Occult; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
