About this Ash of War

Costs 8 FP and sends you straight forward as a lightning bolt. This transferable version ends after the dash; the Death Knight axes' spinning and leaping follow-ups belong to their unique skills.

The dash deals Lightning damage, scaling with weapon upgrade level and Dexterity. It is separate from the weapon's displayed melee attack power and does not gain Faith scaling just because the Death Knights use it.

Affinity changes the independent Dexterity scaling. Keen favors the dash more strongly than Lightning at the same Dexterity, although Lightning can change the ordinary weapon attacks in a different way.

Where to find

Raised chest ledge in Fog Rift Catacombs

Gravesite Plain

Starting Site of Grace: Fog Rift Catacombs

  1. From Castle Front, take the northern ravine beneath Fog Rift Fort's wooden platforms. Follow the misty graveyard to the catacomb doors.
  2. Inside, bait the first spiked ceiling from the doorway and move through its wall recess. Continue downstairs past the imps and casters.
  3. At the next ceiling trap, trigger it before dropping into the room, then cross safely to the lift down.
  4. On the middle floor, reach the long chamber with several spike sections. Use the left-hand recesses between drops; the second recess has a hole in the floor, so do not run blindly into it.
  5. Reach the raised altar at the far end where the caster attacks. Trigger the ceiling and jump into the opening in the side of the lowered trap.
  6. Ride it up and step out onto the high ledge. Open the chest for Blinkbolt. The Death Knight at the dungeon's bottom is optional for this pickup.

Notes

  • Costs 8 FP and sends you straight forward as a lightning bolt. This transferable version ends after the dash; the Death Knight axes' spinning and leaping follow-ups belong to their unique skills.
  • The dash deals Lightning damage, scaling with weapon upgrade level and Dexterity. It is separate from the weapon's displayed melee attack power and does not gain Faith scaling just because the Death Knights use it.
  • Affinity changes the independent Dexterity scaling. Keen favors the dash more strongly than Lightning at the same Dexterity, although Lightning can change the ordinary weapon attacks in a different way.
  • The contact does no stance damage, so it is mainly movement and a small hit rather than a reliable boss stance-break tool. It also does not copy the weapon's bleed or poison into the lightning.
  • The invulnerable part starts after the opening stance. Pressing it just as a hit reaches you is less forgiving than an evasion whose protection begins immediately.
  • A light or heavy attack near the end can bring you out of the dash into an ordinary attack. That is different from having a special Death Knight follow-up built into the Ash.
  • Shard of Alexander and Lightning damage bonuses improve the bolt. Death Knight armor also improves the associated lightning skill; Godfrey Icon does not because the dash cannot be charged.
  • A wet target is more vulnerable to Lightning. Watch where the straight dash ends, especially beside cliffs or behind an enemy whose next swing covers that position.
  • The chest is reached by riding the long chamber's ceiling trap up from the altar. Defeating the Death Knight at the bottom of Fog Rift Catacombs is unnecessary for this separate Ash.
  • Compatible weapon classes: Dagger, Straight Sword, Greatsword, Colossal Sword, Curved Sword, Curved Greatsword, Katana, Twinblade, Thrusting Sword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Axe, Greataxe, Hammer, Great Hammer, Flail, Spear, Great Spear, Halberd, Reaper, Fist, Claw, Whip, Colossal Weapon, Hand-to-Hand, Thrusting Shield, Throwing Blade, Backhand Blade, Light Greatsword, Great Katana, Beast Claw. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
  • Its default affinity is Lightning. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Lightning and Sacred; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
