About this Ash of War

Costs 30 FP for the overhead Magic strike and another 12 FP for the optional horizontal sweep. The full two-stage sequence costs 42 FP.

Each attack can be charged separately. You can release the first early, charge the second, or omit the second entirely when the opening closes.

The Magic damage improves through Intelligence and weapon upgrades independently of ordinary weapon attack power. A large Physical attack rating does not by itself make the blue blade stronger.

Where to find

Ceiling scarab in a cave southwest of Manus Metyr

Scadu Altus

Starting Site of Grace: Cathedral of Manus Metyr

  1. To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
  2. From Highroad Cross in Scadu Altus, follow the road east to Moorth Ruins and activate the grace beside the cross.
  3. Pass through the large stone arch east-southeast of the grace. At the house ahead, turn left toward the leaning tower. Avoid the large open shaft behind the house, which is too deep for a direct drop.
  4. Find the smaller gap between the broken building and the rock wall in front of the leaning tower. Drop onto the balcony-like ledge, turn right past the dogs and follow the cave inward.
  5. In the chamber at the end, use the back-left ledges to descend onto the lower roof. Keep to the ledges rather than dropping through the deep central opening.
  6. To continue east, drop from the lower roof to the ground and take the cave beside the building on the left. Follow it to the long ladder and climb out of the well at Bonny Village grace.
  7. Go east through Bonny Village, watching for the large cleaver-wielding villagers, and cross the two suspension bridges. The second brings you to Bridge Leading to the Village grace.
  8. Follow the road north through the woods and around its bend to Church District Highroad grace. The northern road continues toward Shadow Keep; your destination is the cathedral south of this junction.
  9. Follow the road south through the woods to the large cathedral in the lake. Enter through its main doors and activate Cathedral of Manus Metyr grace.
  10. Before taking the final approach to the cathedral, follow the western ground south along the plateau. Look east toward the cliff as you reach its southern end.
  11. Enter the small cave with fireflies southwest of the cathedral. Look up for the scarab hanging from the ceiling.
  12. Shoot it down and kill it for the Ash. Ymir's quest and the cathedral's bosses are not required.

Notes

  • Costs 30 FP for the overhead Magic strike and another 12 FP for the optional horizontal sweep. The full two-stage sequence costs 42 FP.
  • Each attack can be charged separately. You can release the first early, charge the second, or omit the second entirely when the opening closes.
  • The Magic damage improves through Intelligence and weapon upgrades independently of ordinary weapon attack power. A large Physical attack rating does not by itself make the blue blade stronger.
  • The uncharged overhead strike and sweep each deal 30 stance damage. Charging adds a ground shockwave to the overhead attack: the blade deals 37 stance damage and the wave 11. The charged sweep deals 45, for 93 if all three charged contacts land.
  • The first charged blade and its ground wave are separate contacts. A target only clipped by the outer wave does not take the full close-range result.
  • Shard of Alexander and Spellblade armor improve its Magic skill damage. Magic damage bonuses also apply; a staff's Sorcery Scaling and Graven talismans do not improve a weapon skill.
  • Godfrey Icon improves the charged attacks, including the charged ground wave and sweep. Axe Talisman does not improve these charged skill attacks.
  • The Magic blade does not apply the ordinary weapon's status or coating. A Cold weapon does not make this skill inflict Frostbite.
  • Its resistance to interruption is not damage immunity, and there is a transition between the stages. The full charged sequence is slow enough for a moving enemy to leave or counterattack.
  • The ceiling scarab in the small cave southwest of Manus Metyr gives the Ash. Ymir's quest and the cathedral's later boss encounters are unnecessary.
  • Compatible weapon classes: Dagger, Straight Sword, Greatsword, Curved Sword, Curved Greatsword, Katana, Twinblade, Thrusting Sword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Throwing Blade, Light Greatsword, Great Katana. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
  • Its default affinity is Magic. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Magic and Cold; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
