About this item

Adds 80 base Scarlet Rot buildup to a compatible weapon through a quickly applied, short coating.

The amount added is not a guarantee that every attack applies exactly that much. Different attacks and paired attacks can apply different portions of a weapon's status buildup.

Rot buildup does not increase with Arcane. Adding the coating to a weapon does not make its Scarlet Rot behave like Arcane-scaled Blood Loss or Poison.

In-game description

Solidified grease made from a mixture of rotten materials. Craftable item.

A short string is attached to this lump.

Quickly coats armament, inflicting scarlet rot, but with a brief effect, owing to its small size.

Where to find

Crafting after obtaining Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [22]

Lake of Rot

Starting Site of Grace: Lake of Rot Shoreside

Before you go

  • Crafting Kit
  • Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [22]
  • Ingredients per batch: 1 Root Resin, 1 String and 1 Aeonian Butterfly
  1. Give Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade from Nokron, then use the waygate at the top of Renna's Rise to reach Ainsel River Main. Renna's Rise is the northern tower in the Three Sisters area behind Caria Manor, separate from Ranni's own tower.
  2. Activate Ainsel River Main grace and follow the water through the Claymen toward the hanging creature in Uhl Palace Ruins. Use the ruins on the left as cover from its stone volleys and continue beneath it into the river tunnel.
  3. Pass the ants, including the flying ones. At the open cavern, follow the river to the right; the left branch returns toward the lower river merchant.
  4. Go through the doorway on the right and down the steps to Nokstella, Eternal City grace. The ordinary Ainsel River Well in Liurnia does not reach this upper entrance.
  5. Stay on Nokstella's lower river path instead of taking the stairs into the city. Follow the river to the lift at its far end and ride down to Nokstella Waterfall Basin grace.
  6. Follow the tunnel past the Basilisks. Their clouds cause Death Blight, so move out of the clouds rather than trying to heal through a full buildup bar.
  7. If you have spoken to Miniature Ranni and accepted her request, the Baleful Shadow appears in the open cavern ahead. Defeat it to continue that quest. Speaking to the doll is not required to reach the lake.
  8. Continue beyond the cavern to the lift down to Lake of Rot Shoreside. Activate the grace and prepare healing plus Preserving Boluses or Flame, Cleanse Me before entering the lake.
  9. From the shore, look southwest for the first small obelisk. Run to its floor button to raise dry platforms, then continue south across them. Watch for Basilisks emerging beside the path.
  10. From the southwestern end of those platforms, cross to the next obelisk southwest and press its button. Stop on dry ground to treat Scarlet Rot or restore HP before continuing.
  11. Look toward the enormous doorway on the lake's southern side. Cross the remaining stretches toward that entrance, using exposed stone for breaks. Avoid rolling in the rot, which coats you and keeps buildup going after you leave it.
  12. Enter the large doorway and follow the stairs down to Grand Cloister grace. Activate it before returning for nearby lake loot. The Dragonkin Soldier and the raised Alabaster Lord area are optional detours.
  13. From the cloister entrance, return to the lake side and look northwest for the separate ruined stone building in the southwestern water.
  14. Cross using the small dry patches and enter that ruin. Open its chest for Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [22], then return to Grand Cloister grace to recover.
  15. The book is outside the cloister, not in the shrine below. The lower shrine chest contains Scorpion's Stinger instead.
  16. Buy the Crafting Kit from Kalé at Church of Elleh for 300 runes if Item Crafting is unavailable. Owning the cookbook alone does not open that menu.
  17. Collect 1 Root Resin, 1 String and 1 Aeonian Butterfly, then open Item Crafting outside combat and select Drawstring Rot Grease. One batch makes 1.

Notes

  • Adds 80 base Scarlet Rot buildup to a compatible weapon through a quickly applied, short coating.
  • The amount added is not a guarantee that every attack applies exactly that much. Different attacks and paired attacks can apply different portions of a weapon's status buildup.
  • Rot buildup does not increase with Arcane. Adding the coating to a weapon does not make its Scarlet Rot behave like Arcane-scaled Blood Loss or Poison.
  • Can be applied to a weapon that allows grease. Standard, Heavy, Keen and Quality are the usual compatible affinities; elemental and status affinities prevent ordinary coatings, and unique weapons have their own restrictions.
  • Uses the weapon-buff slot. A different grease or weapon enchantment replaces the coating instead of adding a second coating on top.
  • The target still needs to be vulnerable to rot and its meter must fill. The coating does not give every hit an immediate burst of extra damage.
  • Costs no FP and is consumed when applied. Finish changing equipment first, since switching away from the coated weapon can remove its buff.
  • Each craft makes one using one Root Resin, one String and one Aeonian Butterfly. Carry up to 30, with another 600 in storage.
  • Use it just before an opening where you can land several hits. The ordinary version has a longer coating but adds less rot buildup.
  • Its coating is very brief, unlike ordinary Rot Grease’s minute-long preparation window. Apply it immediately before the hits you intend to land, rather than while travelling toward an enemy.
  • Once the rot triggers, its ongoing damage is separate from the coating timer. The ailment can keep damaging the target after the weapon’s short coating has ended.
  • Its rot deals 0.18% of maximum HP plus 15 HP per second for 90 seconds after triggering, before target-specific exceptions. Arcane does not increase that drain.
