In the time when there was no Erdtree, death was burned in ghostflame. Deathbirds were the keepers of that fire.

Before you go

• Use both Haligtree Secret Medallion halves at the Grand Lift of Rold.
• Visit the northern riverbank at night.

1. Obtain the right half from Albus, disguised as a pot uphill from Village of the Albinaurics grace beneath Liurnia's western plateau. Obtain the left half from the tower rooftop beyond Commander Niall at Castle Sol.
2. Return to the Grand Lift of Rold, stand at the medallion prompt and switch actions to Hoist secret medallion. The ordinary Hoist medallion action leads to a different region.
3. In Hidden Path to the Haligtree, follow the main corridor and take the steps on the left up through the Militia and Land Octopus enemies. Stay on the normal walkway; dropping through the broken railing starts an optional lower dungeon.
4. Activate Hidden Path to the Haligtree grace near the exit and continue outside. The lower Stray Mimic Tear boss is unnecessary for the snowfield.
5. Travel north through the blizzard, following the road and its lights rather than riding toward the cliff edges. Activate Consecrated Snowfield and continue toward Inner Consecrated Snowfield as visibility improves.
6. Once visibility improves near Inner Consecrated Snowfield, rest and set the time to night. Follow the frozen river northwest toward the Apostate Derelict approach, staying on its northern side.
7. Approach the open riverbank northwest of Ordina to make the Death Rite Bird appear. Defeat it for Explosive Ghostflame. The town's evergaol puzzle and the Haligtree are unnecessary for this fight.
8. After a failed attempt, set the time to night again at a grace before returning. The bird in the Mountaintops south of Castle Sol is a different encounter and gives Death Ritual Spear instead.

Notes

• Requires 42 Intelligence, 30 Faith and one memory slot and costs 29 FP. Strike the ground with your staff to create an explosion around you, followed by patches of lingering ghostflame.
• Deals magic damage, not fire damage. Fire-boosting equipment does not strengthen it, and the flames do not clear Frostbite the way an ordinary fire hit would.
• The main explosion inflicts 130 Frostbite buildup, and individual lingering-flame hits inflict 38. Frostbite triggers only after the target's resistance bar fills. Intelligence or Arcane does not increase these fixed buildup amounts.
• The explosion can knock smaller enemies away, which can also push them out of the flames left behind. Large enemies that remain in the area can be hit by more of the lingering flames. Do not assume every target takes the blast and all flame hits.
• The lingering patches last about four seconds. Cast during a long recovery or while the enemy is distracted, since the ground strike has a slow preparation and does not guarantee safety before the explosion.
• This spell cannot be charged. Godfrey Icon gives no benefit, while ordinary sorcery and magic-damage bonuses strengthen its direct damage.
• Prince of Death's Staff gives a 10% damage bonus. You can hold it active in the other hand while a different staff casts, and two copies multiply to 21%. Only the staff doing the casting supplies sorcery scaling.
• Meeting both spell requirements does not force every staff to scale with both attributes. An Intelligence staff still gets its casting strength from Intelligence, while Prince of Death's Staff uses Intelligence and Faith. Choose the casting staff around the attributes you have invested in.
• The northern Consecrated Snowfield Death Rite Bird awards it at night. It is separate from the bird near Castle Sol and does not require solving Ordina's puzzle.
