About this Ash of War
Costs 19 FP for a thrust that launches a spear of Fire. At close range, the weapon contact and projectile can both connect; at range, you rely on the projectile.
Hold the skill to charge it for stronger contact damage, a stronger projectile and more projectile reach. It is a single charged action, with no separate heavy-attack follow-up.
The weapon thrust uses the weapon's attack power and deals physical Pierce alongside any elemental damage on the weapon. The separate flame projectile scales with Faith and weapon upgrade level.

In-game description
This Ash of War grants an armament the Flame Art affinity and the following skill:
"Flame Spear: Skill of Kood, captain of the Fire Knights. Ready weapon for a thrusting attack and unleash a spear of flame straight ahead. Charge the attack to increase damage dealt and distance travelled."
Usable on armaments capable of thrusting (claws and backhand blades excepted).
Where to find
Fire Knight Kood before Messmer's approach
Shadow Keep
Starting Site of Grace: Storehouse, Seventh Floor
- Enter the Realm of Shadow after defeating Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, by touching the withered arm in Mohg's arena.
- From Highroad Cross in Scadu Altus, follow the main road north to Shadow Keep's southern gate. Ride the entrance lift and activate Shadow Keep Main Gate grace.
- Defeat Golden Hippopotamus in the plaza. This is the front-door route; the flooded Church District provides a different way into the keep.
- From Main Gate Plaza, leave through the west-northwest doorway, pass through the armory and climb the stairs. Continue up the wooden steps to the dining hall, where two Black Knights guard the route.
- Leave the dining hall through its southeastern exit to the upper rampart. Follow the rampart past the burning boats and watch for the small Shadow Militiamen hiding beside them.
- Take the stairs leading north-northeast toward the large lift, passing the Fire Knight in front of it. Ride up and activate Storehouse, First Floor grace.
- Inside the storehouse, use the stairs behind the central specimen to climb through the book-lined galleries. Stay on the ascending route rather than taking the side lift toward West Rampart.
- On the third-floor walkway, get past the Fire Knight and the small ambushers. Jump onto the feet of the large hanging specimen, climb along its body and jump from the head to the balcony with Storehouse, Fourth Floor grace.
- Leave the fourth-floor room through its open window-door, turn left and climb the outside stairs. Follow the balcony past the bats and go back inside through the next doorway.
- Follow the inner gallery around the bookshelves and climb the stairs past the Fire Knights and shadow scholars to Storehouse, Seventh Floor grace, in the room where Freyja can appear.
- Leave that grace room and cross the northeastern wooden bridge. Follow the walkway to the hanging bull, then reach the lower gallery beside it and pull the lever that moves the central specimens.
- From the balcony near the lever, jump onto the newly positioned wooden beam. Follow it inward, cross the raised specimen platforms and climb the next specimen's tail and back to jump from its head onto the upper balcony.
- Go through the small room and back outside. Turn right, climb the stairs and cross the outer bridge toward the large closed doors. Defeat Fire Knight Kood, who guards this approach and awards Winged Serpent Helm and Flame Spear.
- Collect Flame Spear and Winged Serpent Helm from Kood, then open the doors and climb to Dark Chamber Entrance grace. Messmer is unnecessary for both rewards.
Notes
- Costs 19 FP for a thrust that launches a spear of Fire. At close range, the weapon contact and projectile can both connect; at range, you rely on the projectile.
- Hold the skill to charge it for stronger contact damage, a stronger projectile and more projectile reach. It is a single charged action, with no separate heavy-attack follow-up.
- The weapon thrust uses the weapon's attack power and deals physical Pierce alongside any elemental damage on the weapon. The separate flame projectile scales with Faith and weapon upgrade level.
- Flame Art affinity strengthens the projectile's Faith scaling. A physical or Fire affinity still leaves the projectile using Faith; Strength on a Fire weapon does not replace that projectile attribute.
- Applying the skill coats the weapon with 95 additional Fire attack power for 40 seconds. That coating is a flat addition, so raising Faith does not increase the 95 itself.
- The skill can apply its own coating on its Fire and Flame Art affinities even though those affinities do not allow ordinary grease and weapon enchantments. It replaces a competing weapon coating rather than stacking with it.
- Winged Serpent Helm increases qualifying skill damage by 10%, or Messmer's Helm by 8%. Shard of Alexander strengthens the skill and Godfrey Icon strengthens its fully charged use.
- The flame projectile does not copy the weapon's status buildup. The thrust remains a weapon hit and is the parryable part, so standing close enough for both hits also carries that risk.
- Kood awards it with Winged Serpent Helm on the upper bridge. Queelign's separate invasion reward is Flame Skewer, not this Ash.
- Compatible weapon classes: Dagger, Straight Sword, Greatsword, Colossal Sword, Katana, Twinblade, Thrusting Sword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Spear, Great Spear, Halberd, Thrusting Shield, Light Greatsword, Great Katana. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
- Its default affinity is Flame Art. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Fire and Flame Art; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
