About this Ash of War
The initial thrust creates ghostflame. A light attack spreads a trail along the ground, while a strong attack causes an explosion.
Choose the follow-up for the situation. The trail covers ground, while the explosion concentrates its effect near the initial flame.
The ghostflame deals magic damage and builds Frostbite, despite looking like ordinary fire.

In-game description
This Ash of War grants an armament the Cold affinity and the following skill:
"Ghostflame Call: Thrust out armament to summon ghostflame. Follow up with a normal attack to set the ground ablaze with ghostflame, or a strong attack to trigger a massive explosion."
Usable on swords and spears
(small armaments, twinblades, and backhand blades excepted).
Where to find
Death Rite Bird near the grace
Charo's Hidden Grave
Starting Site of Grace: Charo's Hidden Grave
Before you go
- Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man to reach the plateau.
- From Castle Front, follow the road southeast toward Pillar Path Waypoint. At the fork, use the lower road toward Igon rather than climbing to the Suppressing Pillar.
- Continue south-southwest past the broken dragon statues. An Ancient Dragon-Man invades along this approach. The cave entrance is on the left near the end of the path, marked by a fire.
- Activate Dragon's Pit grace and follow the lit passage down. Watch for skeletons below the first ledge and around the next corner. Strike their glowing remains after knocking them down to stop them getting back up.
- In the large cavern with the pillars, follow the left-hand ledge down and take the passage beside the distant crossbow skeleton. Continue onto the sloping stairs in the next chamber.
- Take the downward route toward the large altar and pit. The stairs going up lead to an optional Magma Wyrm; that fight is not needed to reach the exit.
- At the bottom, approach the message beside the deep chasm. Walk straight off this lowest ledge into the pit to land safely by the boss mist. Do not jump from the higher rooms or aim toward the side walls.
- Enter the boss mist and defeat Ancient Dragon-Man to receive Dragon-Hunter's Great Katana automatically. The road invader is a separate encounter and does not give this weapon.
- After collecting it, the large doors at the rear lead onward toward Jagged Peak. The return exit sends you back to the cave entrance instead.
- Defeat the Ancient Dragon-Man and leave through the rear doors. Follow the valley south to the enormous dead dragon at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion.
- Cross around the dead dragon to the red-flowered plateau on its western side. Follow it to Charo's Hidden Grave and activate the grace.
- Clear the nearby Gravebirds before approaching the Death Rite Bird in the lake north of the grace. Defeat the boss for Ghostflame Call.
- This particular bird appears during the day as well as at night. It does not require waiting for nighttime.
Notes
- The initial thrust creates ghostflame. A light attack spreads a trail along the ground, while a strong attack causes an explosion.
- Choose the follow-up for the situation. The trail covers ground, while the explosion concentrates its effect near the initial flame.
- The ghostflame deals magic damage and builds Frostbite, despite looking like ordinary fire.
- This transferable skill is separate from the Death's Poker's unique version. Do not assume both use identical damage values.
- Compatible weapon classes: Straight Sword, Greatsword, Colossal Sword, Curved Sword, Curved Greatsword, Katana, Thrusting Sword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Spear, Great Spear, Halberd, Light Greatsword, Great Katana. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
- Its default affinity is Cold. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Magic and Cold; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
- Costs 15 FP for the opening thrust and orb. Either the light or heavy follow-up costs another 10 FP, making 25 FP for one complete branch.
- Weapon contacts use the weapon’s own attack power. The separate Magic ghostflame improves through Dexterity, Intelligence, affinity and reinforcement, rather than copying the weapon’s complete attack rating.
- Keen favors the ghostflame’s Dexterity contribution, Magic favors Intelligence, and Cold improves both compared with Standard. The strongest affinity for a flame effect is not automatically the strongest ordinary weapon setup.
- The opening weapon thrust and the two alternative weapon follow-ups each apply half the weapon’s normal status buildup. The separate flames apply their own Frostbite instead.
- The small orb and ground flames apply 20 Frost per qualifying contact; the heavy explosion applies 80. A target must remain in contact for the lingering flames to keep building frost.
- Shard of Alexander improves skill damage and Spellblade armor can strengthen its Magic portions. Godfrey Icon does not apply because selecting a follow-up is not charging.
- A staff or Graven talisman does not strengthen this as a sorcery. It is a transferable weapon skill even though the visual effect resembles a spell.
