About this Ash of War
Costs 4 FP per use, including a missed attempt. The golden arc extends the area that catches a parryable melee attack, making exact spacing less restrictive than an ordinary close parry.
Its active timing window is short in the current version. The larger arc gives reach rather than a promise of an easier timing window than Carian Retaliation.
It does not make an unparryable attack parryable. It also does not turn incoming spells into glintblades; Carian Retaliation is a different skill.

Where to find
Teleporting scarab above the grand stairway
Capital Outskirts
Starting Site of Grace: Outer Wall Phantom Tree
- Reach Altus Plateau through Dectus or Ruin-Strewn Precipice. Follow the main highway east from Altus Highway Junction toward Leyndell's outer wall. Get through the entrance past the two Tree Sentinels and activate Outer Wall Phantom Tree.
- Follow the broad stairway northeast toward Leyndell's western gate. Near the bend toward the southeast, look up to the balcony on the northern side.
- Bring down the scarab with a ranged attack and finish it before it teleports away.
- You can collect this without entering the capital proper or defeating its major bosses.
Notes
- Costs 4 FP per use, including a missed attempt. The golden arc extends the area that catches a parryable melee attack, making exact spacing less restrictive than an ordinary close parry.
- Its active timing window is short in the current version. The larger arc gives reach rather than a promise of an easier timing window than Carian Retaliation.
- It does not make an unparryable attack parryable. It also does not turn incoming spells into glintblades; Carian Retaliation is a different skill.
- Without enough FP, it falls back to an ordinary parry. Do not expect the extended golden effect after spending your last FP.
- Sacred is its default affinity, but the skill has no damaging Holy hit and does not require Faith to parry. Meet the shield's own requirements.
- Can use this Ash of War on compatible small and medium shields. A fixed-skill shield or a greatshield cannot use it.
- While the shield is held normally in your left hand, its skill takes priority over the right-hand weapon's skill. Two-hand that weapon if you want its skill instead.
- A successful physical parry creates an opening only when that enemy's parry requirement is met. Some bosses need several parries before you can move close and perform the critical attack.
- A mistimed parry is less dependable than an ordinary guard and can cost both HP and stamina. Grabs and other unparryable attacks need a different response.
- Supports Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Lightning and Sacred affinity, with the required whetblades for extra choices.
- The teleporting scarab is above the large outer stairway. A ranged hit helps reach it before it escapes; entering Leyndell proper or defeating Morgott is unnecessary.
