About this Ash of War
Costs 10 FP per bolt. Repeat the input to call further bolts while you have enough FP and stamina. Each repetition costs another payment rather than continuing for free.
The bolt deals lightning damage based on Dexterity, weapon reinforcement and affinity. It does not use Faith or a seal's incantation scaling, and the weapon's ordinary attack rating does not directly determine the ranged bolt's damage.
It strikes at the selected target from above, making it useful for pressure beyond melee range. Moving enemies can still leave the impact point, and cover or an obstructed location can interfere with the attack.

In-game description
This Ash of War grants an armament the Lightning affinity and the following skill:
"Thunderbolt: Skill used by the capital's ancient dragon cult. Raise armament aloft to call down a bolt of lightning. Can be fired in rapid succession."
Usable on all melee armaments.
Where to find
Lower courtyard southwest of Avenue Balcony
Leyndell, Royal Capital
Starting Site of Grace: Avenue Balcony
Before you go
- Collect before defeating Maliketh.
- Collect this before defeating Maliketh. The scarab disappears when Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital.
- In the Royal Capital, reach Avenue Balcony. Take the stairs down and go through the doorway ahead.
- Immediately turn left and follow the railing. Look over it into the lower courtyard among the ruined buildings, near the well leading underground.
- Kill the scarab below for Thunderbolt. Use a ranged attack from above if you can; otherwise make a careful descent and finish it in the courtyard.
Notes
- Costs 10 FP per bolt. Repeat the input to call further bolts while you have enough FP and stamina. Each repetition costs another payment rather than continuing for free.
- The bolt deals lightning damage based on Dexterity, weapon reinforcement and affinity. It does not use Faith or a seal's incantation scaling, and the weapon's ordinary attack rating does not directly determine the ranged bolt's damage.
- It strikes at the selected target from above, making it useful for pressure beyond melee range. Moving enemies can still leave the impact point, and cover or an obstructed location can interfere with the attack.
- Targets standing in water can be caught by the extra lightning spread, and wet targets have a different lightning interaction from dry ones. Position and weather can therefore change the result.
- The bolt does not carry the weapon's bleed, poison or coating. It also leaves no lightning buff on the weapon afterward; Lightning Slash provides that separate function.
- Shard of Alexander and relevant lightning-damage bonuses improve the bolt. Godfrey Icon does not apply because there is no charge, and Gravel Stone Seal's Dragon Cult bonus does not strengthen this weapon skill.
- The bolt has only modest stance damage. Repeating it can pressure an enemy, but do not expect the same stance-breaking result as a heavy close-range weapon attack.
- Collect the scarab before defeating Maliketh. The lower Royal Capital courtyard changes when Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital, making this pickup missable for the current journey.
- Compatible weapon classes: Dagger, Straight Sword, Greatsword, Colossal Sword, Curved Sword, Curved Greatsword, Katana, Twinblade, Thrusting Sword, Heavy Thrusting Sword, Axe, Greataxe, Hammer, Great Hammer, Flail, Spear, Great Spear, Halberd, Reaper, Fist, Claw, Whip, Colossal Weapon, Thrusting Shield, Throwing Blade, Backhand Blade, Light Greatsword, Great Katana, Beast Claw. A weapon with a fixed skill cannot use this Ash of War.
- Its default affinity is Lightning. The supported choices are Standard, Heavy, Keen, Quality, Lightning and Sacred; the appropriate whetblade is needed for additional options.
