One of the legendary armaments.

A great ancient dragon, Gransax once rained calamity upon the Royal Capital—the only time in historical record that Leyndell's walls have fallen. This marked the dawn of the war against the ancient dragons.

Before you go

  • Defeat the golden shade of Godfrey to unlock Erdtree Sanctuary.
  • Collect the weapon before defeating Maliketh.
  1. From Erdtree Sanctuary, leave through the western doorway and take the lift down. Continue down the stairs into the area beneath the sanctuary.
  2. Look over the railing on your left for the enormous golden spear embedded in the city. Jump over the railing onto the stone ledge below, then drop onto the shaft of that spear.
  3. Walk carefully up the golden shaft toward the glowing item. Collect it to receive Bolt of Gransax. The drop is survivable along these ledges, but jumping directly to the street below can kill you.

Notes

  • Requires 20 Strength and 40 Dexterity and weighs 8.5. Dexterity is the stronger contributor to physical damage and also improves the lightning portion. Strength contributes only to the physical side; Faith does not scale this weapon or its lightning projectile.
  • Ancient Lightning Spear costs 25 FP and throws a long-range red-lightning projectile. Hold to charge it for more damage. Both versions cost 25 FP, while the charged version takes longer and uses more stamina.
  • The projectile deals lightning damage based on the weapon's lightning attack power, with an additional component improved by reinforcement and Dexterity. The weapon's separate physical attack rating is not added to that ranged hit.
  • Shard of Alexander improves the skill, and Godfrey Icon adds its bonus to the charged projectile. Gravel Stone Seal's Dragon Cult incantation bonus does not apply to a weapon skill.
  • The projectile is useful for opening a fight at range and can knock down susceptible enemies when charged. It is still avoidable, and cover or poor aiming can stop the shot. Leave time to recover after throwing it.
  • Lightning hitting water can produce a small additional splash around the impact. That does not give the ordinary spear Frostbite or turn the attack into a cold spell.
  • Deals 20% extra damage against ordinary dragons and 10% against ancient dragons. The two classifications have different bonuses.
  • Upgrade with Somber Smithing Stones to +10. Ancient Lightning Spear and the affinity are fixed, and grease or an outside weapon enchantment cannot be applied.
  • Collect it before defeating Maliketh and turning Leyndell into the Ashen Capital. Burning the Erdtree alone is not this pickup's cutoff. If it was missed, a later journey or another player's dropped weapon is needed.
  • This is one of the legendary armaments. The item is the small pickup on the enormous golden spear; defeating a dragon elsewhere does not award it.
