Before you go

Defeat Morgott at the top of Leyndell and activate Elden Throne grace. Walk up to the Erdtree's thorns and examine the blocked entrance.
Return to the grace and rest. Speak to Melina to receive the Rold Medallion; it is a conversation reward rather than a corpse drop in the arena.
Travel to Avenue Balcony and climb the stairs to the main street. Turn left and follow it east to the large double doors. Push them open and climb the road through the Misbegotten and perfumers.
At the upper end, enter the lift room and ride up. Cross the long bridge out of the capital, then take the next lift down into the Forbidden Lands. The branch to the Divine Tower of East Altus is separate.
Activate Forbidden Lands grace, then follow the northeast path through the fog past the red scarabs and small golden tree. Watch for Vulgar Militia beside the path.
At the statues flanking the great staircase, Black Blade Kindred drops onto the approach. Ride past it, climb the stairs and activate Grand Lift of Rold grace on the right inside the building.
Rest, then return down the stairs for the boss. Defeat it to receive Gargoyle's Black Axe and Gargoyle's Black Blades together. Hoisting the medallion and clearing the Mountaintops are unnecessary for the reward.
This is a fixed reward from the Forbidden Lands kindred. The kindred outside Bestial Sanctum drops a different sword and halberd.

Physical damage scales most strongly with Strength, with weaker Dexterity scaling.
Holy damage scales most strongly with Faith.
Upgrade it with Somber Smithing Stones. Its maximum upgrade is +10.
Its War Cry skill is fixed and cannot be replaced with an Ash of War.
Grease and weapon enchantments cannot be applied. Its affinity is fixed as well as its skill.
Requires 24 Strength, 8 Dexterity and 22 Faith and weighs 8.5. Two-handing meets its Strength requirement at 16, but you still need the full Faith and Dexterity requirements.
War Cry costs 16 FP and lasts 40 seconds. It improves the Physical side of the weapon and changes heavy attacks into charging attacks; it does not give the Holy component the same attack-power increase.
Roar Medallion improves the altered heavy attacks, and Axe Talisman helps when they are fully charged. These are ordinary heavy attacks changed by a buff, rather than direct skill hits for Shard of Alexander.
The short blade makes spacing more demanding than with a long-shafted greataxe. Its low weight for the class does not give it extra reach.
The Black Blade name does not give ordinary hits a health-draining effect. This axe has no innate status buildup and cannot use Corpse Wax Cutter.
