In-game description

Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.

Use to summon a spirit of the Kindred of Rot.

This spirit takes the form of a crawling pest, its chitinous body making a dry rustling sound.

Attacks enemies by secreting sticky threads.

The Kindred of Rot are the servants of the Goddess of Rot—servants that have been forsaken.

Where to find

Caelid Catacombs

Caelid

Starting Site of Grace: Caelid Catacombs

  1. From eastern Limgrave, follow the road beyond Summonwater Village into Caelid. Stay on the highway as it curves south around the Swamp of Aeonia toward Caelid Highway South.
  2. Follow Caelid's main highway along the southern edge of the Swamp of Aeonia.
  3. From Caelid Highway South, continue southeast along the road toward the junction below the swamp.
  4. Find Caelid Catacombs at the southern cliff southeast of the Cathedral of Dragon Communion. Approach by the lower path around the cliff rather than trying to drop directly from the cathedral.
  5. Enter, descend past the skeletons and reach the chamber with Scarlet Rot on the lower floor. Remove the archer on the ledge before searching below.
  6. Continue through to the room with the large central pillar and the closed boss door. Strike the false wall on the pillar's southwest side to reveal the lever.
  7. Pull the lever, enter the opened boss room and defeat the Cemetery Shade. Watch for the green web attack that can hold you still before its melee combo.
  8. The ashes are the boss reward. The Miranda Sprout Ashes are another pickup behind a different false wall under the earlier staircase.

Notes

  • Costs 73 FP and summons one Kindred of Rot with a polearm and Pest Threads. Upgrade it with Grave Glovewort.
  • Pest Threads deal physical damage despite their spell-like appearance. Magic resistance does not describe the protection an enemy has against those threads.
  • The spirit does not automatically apply Scarlet Rot. Its name and connection to rot are not an extra listed status attack.
  • Nearby Poison or Scarlet Rot activation can strengthen its attacks. You or another effect must provide the ailment if you want to build around that trigger.
  • The polearm gives it a melee option, while its threads let it contribute beyond that reach. Keeping the enemy occupied gives its ranged attacks more time to connect.
  • Caelid Catacombs' Cemetery Shade awards the ashes. Miranda Sprout Ashes are a separate hidden-room pickup in the same dungeon.
  • Nearby Poison or Scarlet Rot activation gives it 20% more damage for 20 seconds. That is its own temporary effect, rather than a reason you must equip the player's Kindred of Rot's Exultation.
  • An enemy that is already afflicted does not supply a new trigger on every damage tick. Another qualifying activation refreshes the effect instead of stacking unlimited 20% bonuses.
  • Its physical threads are weaker than simply giving the player's Pest Threads spell to an equally strong copy. Your Faith and sacred seal do not become the summon's spell scaling.
  • Upgrade through Roderika to +10 using Grave Glovewort and a Great Grave Glovewort for the final level. The summoning cost stays the same.
  • Needs Spirit Calling Bell, enough available FP and the rebirth-monument icon that permits spirit summoning. The ash remains reusable, but a defeated summon cannot simply be replaced during the same encounter.
