About this spirit
Costs 40 FP and summons four Putrid Corpses. They appear around the rebirth monument, which can put them some distance from you rather than immediately at your side.
Their moaning draws attention and their substantial health helps them hold it. Their slow movement and weak attacks make distraction their main job, rather than quickly killing a boss.
They can move and attack, but are slow to reach a target. Pay attention to where the group appears before relying on them to pull an enemy away from you.

In-game description
Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.
Use to summon the spirits of four putrid corpses.
These spirits appear some distance from the summoner. Though their movements are dull and confused, their low moans make them effective at drawing the attention of enemies. True death does not come easily for them.
Where to find
Gaol Cave
Caelid
Starting Site of Grace: Gaol Cave
Before you go
- Bring two Stonesword Keys.
- From Fort Gael North in Caelid, head southeast to the small scarlet rot pool east of the fort. Search the pool's southern cliff for Gaol Cave. Use two Stonesword Keys at its imp seal, then activate the grace inside.
- Follow the tunnels past the rats until the weak floor gives way. Drop into the lower prison passage. The cells are locked for now; one lever opens them together later.
- Continue past the wooden door and the militia ambush. Drop from the small ledge, watching for another militia fighter below. In the room with the guarded large metal gate, take the tunnel on the right instead of trying to open the gate.
- Pass the rats and enter the room with bookshelves and a chest. Clear the militia fighters on the lower floor, watch for the one above, then climb the stairs and pull the lever. This opens the cells and metal gate.
- The released burning prisoners can swell up and explode. Give them room and move away when they start to swell. Use the wooden door downstairs to return to the ledge beside the Stake of Marika.
- Drop from that ledge and follow the prison passage back toward the large metal gate. Go through the opened gate, then break the wooden boards in the southwest part of the room beyond.
- Descend the shaft using the intermediate ledges rather than dropping straight to the bottom. Reaching the bottom starts the Frenzied Duelist fight, so heal before the final drop.
- Defeat the Frenzied Duelist to receive Putrid Corpse Ashes directly. The exit tunnel beyond the arena leads to a separate sword pickup; the ashes are the boss reward.
Notes
- Costs 40 FP and summons four Putrid Corpses. They appear around the rebirth monument, which can put them some distance from you rather than immediately at your side.
- Their moaning draws attention and their substantial health helps them hold it. Their slow movement and weak attacks make distraction their main job, rather than quickly killing a boss.
- They can move and attack, but are slow to reach a target. Pay attention to where the group appears before relying on them to pull an enemy away from you.
- Their ordinary attacks deal physical damage. They do not inflict Scarlet Rot simply because of the name, and they are separate from the exploding burning prisoners inside Gaol Cave.
- Wide attacks can catch several corpses together. Use the attention they draw to heal, recover FP or attack, rather than assuming four bodies will survive every area attack.
- Upgrade them with Grave Glovewort to +10, using a Great Grave Glovewort for the final upgrade. They do not use Ghost Glovewort.
- Like other Spirit Ashes, they require an available rebirth monument and cannot be used during ordinary multiplayer. The Frenzied Duelist awards them after the normal two-key route through Gaol Cave.
