Starting Site of Grace: Isolated Merchant's Shack

Before you go

  • Bring 1,200 runes.
  1. Reach Dragonbarrow West in northern Caelid and follow the road northwest to Isolated Merchant's Shack, west of the area's Minor Erdtree. This is the Dragonbarrow shack, rather than the similarly named Weeping Peninsula shop.
  2. Activate the grace beside the shack and visit during daylight. Buy Beast-Repellent Torch from the merchant for 1,200 runes.
  3. If the merchant is absent at night or the Bell Bearing Hunter appears, return in daylight and reload the area. Defeating the Hunter is not required for the purchase.

Notes

  • Discourages many ordinary dogs, wolves, rats and giant rats from attacking while it is in an active hand. It also works on Basilisks, Crystal Snails, boars, sheep, ordinary bears and many Caelid giant dogs.
  • It is not protection from every beast. Runebears, giant crows, red-eyed Caelid giant dogs and the giant dogs in the Mountaintops can still attack. Boss creatures and scripted ambushes are not made safe by the general effect.
  • A repelled animal may keep watching you without attacking. Hitting it or staying too close for too long can make it attack anyway, so use the opening to pass rather than standing against it.
  • The effect still works with the torch on your back while two-handing the other weapon, provided it remains in the active hand slot. You do not need to keep using Torch Attack or spend FP to maintain the repellent.
  • Requires 12 Strength and eight Dexterity for normal attacks, and weighs 2.5. Physical damage favors Strength; the Fire portion has no attribute scaling and improves through reinforcement.
  • Can use compatible Ashes of War, with No Skill as the useful option for letting your other hand's skill take priority. It keeps Standard affinity; whetblades do not add elemental or status affinities to this torch.
  • Upgrade it with Smithing Stones to +25. Grease and weapon enchantments cannot be applied.
  • Sold for 1,200 runes at the Dragonbarrow Isolated Merchant. The torch is reusable; the incense does not run out, and it does not act like a temporary consumable.
