Before you go

From The First Step in Limgrave, follow the road north to the ruined Church of Elleh. Avoid the mounted Tree Sentinel if you are not ready to fight it.
Speak to Merchant Kalé beside the church campfire and buy Torch for 200 runes. No boss or dungeon completion is required.

Requires five Strength and five Dexterity, and weighs 1.5. Strength gives its physical damage stronger scaling than Dexterity. Its Fire portion increases through upgrades, rather than gaining an attribute bonus from those two stats.
Equip it in an active hand for light. In the left hand you can raise it for a better view; a torch sitting unused in your inventory does not illuminate the cave.
Torch Attack costs no FP and thrusts it toward an enemy. The weapon deals physical and Fire damage, so it can serve as a simple early Fire attack as well as a light.
Can use compatible Ashes of War, with No Skill as the useful option for letting your other hand's skill take priority. It keeps Standard affinity; whetblades do not add elemental or status affinities to this torch.
Upgrade it with Smithing Stones to +25. Grease and weapon enchantments cannot be applied.
This ordinary torch does not reveal invisible Black Knife Assassins or repel beasts. Sentry's Torch and Beast-Repellent Torch have those separate effects.
A Lantern is a hands-free lighting alternative when you want a shield or another armament in the left hand. It does not supply the special torches' utilities.
