Compare body armor
The ten same-slot pieces closest in weight to Beast Champion Armor. Lower weight is lighter; higher poise, negation and resistance provide more protection. Negation differences are percentage points.
Weighs 17.5 and provides 34 poise. It has no attribute, spell or weapon-skill bonus.
Bernahl drops Beast Champion Armor (Altered), without the cape. The regular caped chest is made by tailoring that reward, rather than by waiting for a different random drop.
The regular chest weighs 17.5 and the altered version weighs 16.4. Both provide 34 poise; removing the cape lowers other defenses and resistances, but does not lower this chest's poise.
In-game description
Silver armor engraved with tiny beasts.
Worn by Bernahl the Recusant.
Beasts are drawn to champions, and to lords. And this armor befits a champion worthy of becoming a lord. And that is what Bernahl was.
Until his maiden threw herself into the fire.
Where to find
Tower below the Great Bridge
Crumbling Farum Azula
Starting Site of Grace: Beside the Great Bridge
Before you go
Defeat Rykard and reach Crumbling Farum Azula.
Obtain the altered chest and ordinary Tailoring Tools.
Keep Bernahl alive through Volcano Manor. Finish his joint Leyndell assignment and collect Gelmir's Fury first if you want those rewards, then defeat Rykard. Return to Bernahl at the manor and finish his remaining dialogue.
Later, reach Beside the Great Bridge grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. Climb the stairs onto the broad bridge and turn away from the uphill route toward the Draconic Tree Sentinel and Maliketh.
Go to the building at the bridge's opposite end. Descend through the Beastmen rooms and leave onto the outside balcony. Use the ladder there to reach the lower walkway.
Follow the walkway toward the separate tower. Recusant Bernahl invades on this approach; make room to fight rather than backing blindly toward a ledge.
Defeat him for Devourer's Scepter, Blasphemous Claw and his armor, including the altered chest. His joint Leyndell assignment is not required for this invasion, and defeating Maliketh does not prevent it on the current version.
To restore the chest's cape, obtain the ordinary Tailoring Tools from the Demi-Human Chiefs in Coastal Cave on western Limgrave's beach.
At a grace, choose Alter garments and change Beast Champion Armor (Altered) into Beast Champion Armor for 500 runes. Boc can do this free once his tailoring service is available. The change is reversible.
Knight Bernahl at Warmaster's Shack
Limgrave
Starting Site of Grace: Warmaster's Shack
Before you go
Bernahl must still be at the shack.
This route kills Bernahl and ends his later joint quest.
Obtain the altered chest and ordinary Tailoring Tools.
From Stormhill Shack in northern Limgrave, follow the road east into the woods to Warmaster's Shack. Visit during daylight to find Knight Bernahl inside; the nighttime Bell Bearing Hunter is a different enemy.
Killing Bernahl here gives his weapon and armor early, but prevents his later Manor assignment, Raging Wolf outfit and Gelmir's Fury reward. Keep him alive and use the later invasion if you want those rewards.
If you choose the early kill, defeat Bernahl and collect Devourer's Scepter, Beast Champion Helm, Gauntlets, Greaves and Beast Champion Armor (Altered), along with his bell bearing. The chest drops without its cape.

Changing the chest costs 500 runes with ordinary tailoring, or is free through Boc. The change can be reversed and does not remove a hidden effect.
Killing Bernahl at Warmaster's Shack obtains the armor early but ends his later joint Manor quest. Keeping him alive allows the later Farum Azula invasion instead.
The invasion awards Blasphemous Claw in addition to the armor and weapon. The early shack kill does not give that separate tool.
These are fixed rewards from Bernahl, not low-chance drops to farm. The armor can be mixed with other pieces without losing a full-set bonus.
