In-game description

Barbed rod carried by Deathbirds.

The birds are graveyard fire keepers; it is said they rake out the ashen remains of the dead from their kilns.

Thrust out the barbed rod and set its tip alight with ghostflame. Follow up with a normal attack to set the ground ablaze with ghostflame, or a strong attack to trigger a massive explosion.

Starting Site of Grace: Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank

Before you go

  • Visit at night.
  1. Rest at Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank and pass time until nightfall. Head southeast onto the open ground outside the swamp.
  2. Approach the Death Rite Bird's area and defeat it to receive Death's Poker. If the bird is absent, check that it is night and that you have not already defeated it in this playthrough.
  3. The fight is on dry land southeast of the swamp-bank grace, rather than inside Commander O'Neil's root-covered central arena. Check the enemy name: this is a Death Rite Bird, not one of the ordinary Deathbirds in other regions.

Notes

  • Requires 15 Strength, 17 Dexterity and 11 Intelligence and weighs 8.5. Ordinary physical hits scale mainly with Dexterity, with weaker Strength scaling. Its smaller magic portion scales with Intelligence.
  • The weapon has 65 innate Frostbite buildup. Intelligence and Arcane do not increase that fixed ordinary-hit buildup; the displayed Intelligence scaling is damage scaling.
  • Ghostflame Ignition costs 15 FP to create the flame at the tip. Follow with a light attack for a ground trail or a heavy attack for an explosion; either follow-up costs another 10 FP, making the complete sequence 25 FP.
  • The ghostflame orb, trail and explosion deal magic damage based on reinforcement and Intelligence. These effects are calculated separately from ordinary physical attack rating, so a Dexterity increase that improves sword hits does not directly increase the magical flames.
  • The light follow-up leaves fire-like ground effects that can repeatedly damage an enemy standing in them. The heavy follow-up gives a more immediate area explosion. A fast-moving enemy can leave the trail, so choose the follow-up around the opening you actually have.
  • The white flames build Frostbite rather than dealing fire damage. They do not automatically clear an existing Frostbite condition, and increasing magic damage does not increase Frostbite's separate burst.
  • The flame at the tip can deal damage before a follow-up. Actual weapon contacts and the separate magical effects have different damage and status behavior; a ranged flame hit is not an ordinary full-strength sword hit.
  • Shard of Alexander, Spellblade armor and magic-damage bonuses support the damaging ghostflame skill. Snow Witch Hat and Graven talismans boost specified sorceries rather than this weapon skill. Godfrey Icon does not apply because choosing a follow-up is not charging.
  • Upgrade with Somber Smithing Stones to +10. The skill and affinity are fixed, and outside grease or a weapon enchantment cannot be applied.
  • The Caelid Death Rite Bird appears at night. Defeating a bird in the lakes, the Mountaintops or the Snowfield gives a different reward; the weapon is not a random drop shared by every bird.
