Symbolic of their iron conviction in their crusade, the Black Knights will never yield. Nor will they ever doubt their purpose.

Starting Site of Grace: Scadu Altus, West

Before you go

  • To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
  • Reach Scadu Altus.
  1. From Highroad Cross in Scadu Altus, go west toward the water and waygate. Follow the water's northern edge, then continue west to Scadu Altus, West grace on the cliff overlooking Fog Rift Fort.
  2. Look immediately northwest below the grace for the rock ledges leading to the fort's tower. Drop onto each visible ledge and then the tower, rather than jumping directly into the ravine.
  3. Follow the rampart past the spearmen and through the room with two waiting soldiers. Keep away from the explosive barrels while they attack; a ranged Fire attack can set off barrels from a safer distance.
  4. Beyond the tower rooms, stay on the main ramparts toward the higher stone bridge and the larger bastion. The stairs to the narrow wooden bridge lead to a different cookbook detour.
  5. Cross the stone bridge toward the large building. Black Knight Garrew comes out to fight; defeat him for the guaranteed Black Steel Greatshield. His frog-like Crucible tongue is an enemy attack, not a skill added to the shield.
  6. The courtyard below contains a separate flail pickup and the roof above the bastion has a talisman. Neither detour is necessary to receive the shield.

Notes

  • Requires 35 Strength and weighs 18. Standard affinity blocks 100% physical damage and 84% Holy damage, with 71 base Guard Boost.
  • Sacred affinity reaches complete Holy blocking from +10 onward. It reduces physical protection to 95%, so an attack with physical and Holy portions can still deal physical chip damage.
  • At +25, the Sacred Holy value technically exceeds 100%, but that does not heal you or provide extra protection beyond completely blocking that damage type. Guarding still costs stamina.
  • Shield Bash is the default skill, costing 10 FP. Can use compatible Ashes of War, including No Skill if you want your right-hand weapon skill available instead.
  • Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Standard shield attacks scale with Strength; Sacred adds Faith scaling to the Holy damage of shield attacks rather than requiring Faith to obtain its Holy guarding benefit.
  • Can use Shield Grease or a compatible defensive shield spell even with an elemental affinity. Ordinary weapon coatings and defensive shield buffs have different rules.
  • It does not have Black Steel Greathammer's special guard-counter explosion. Sharing the Black Steel name does not add that weapon effect to this shield.
  • Black Knight Garrew at Fog Rift Fort gives a guaranteed shield. The ordinary Black Knights carrying similar shields are not an interchangeable random-drop farm.
