Greatshield featuring sumptuous ornamentation used by the scions of great families.

Due to their excessive size, these shields were at times seen as the hallmark of little lordlings who were too timid to earn a few nicks and scratches.

Capital Outskirts

Starting Site of Grace: Hermit Merchant's Shack

Before you go

  • Reach the Capital Outskirts and bring 5,500 runes.
  1. Reach Capital Outskirts on Altus Plateau and activate Outer Wall Battleground. Follow the road toward the northwestern side of the outer wall and climb toward the shack on the cliff inside it.
  2. Activate Hermit Merchant's Shack grace beside the hut. Visit during the day; if the nighttime hunter has replaced the merchant, pass time to morning and reload the area.
  3. Speak to the Hermit Merchant and buy Distinguished Greatshield for 5,500 runes. Entering Leyndell and defeating the Draconic Tree Sentinel are unnecessary.

Notes

  • Requires 32 Strength and weighs 16. Standard affinity has 100% physical protection and 71 base Guard Boost, making this a ready shop option for a heavier blocking build.
  • Standard elemental protection is 65% Magic, 63% Fire, 60% Holy and 54% Lightning. Its ornate appearance does not add a hidden resistance or passive buff.
  • Has No Skill by default, leaving a right-hand weapon skill available while held in the left hand. Can use compatible Ashes of War to add a shield action.
  • Its Standard physical shield attacks scale with Strength. Raising Strength above the requirement does not itself increase the percentage of incoming damage blocked.
  • The Hermit Merchant sells one for 5,500 runes. You can buy it in Capital Outskirts without entering Leyndell or defeating the Draconic Tree Sentinel.
  • Visit the shack during the day for the merchant. Its Bell Bearing Hunter encounter is a separate nighttime event and does not need to be defeated for this purchase.
  • Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Defensive Shield Grease or a compatible shield-buff spell can improve guarding separately from offensive weapon coatings. Reinforcement does not remove chip damage from an incompletely blocked damage type.
