Starting Site of Grace: Gatefront

  1. From Church of Elleh, follow the road north through the woods to Gatefront Ruins. Activate Gatefront beside the large gate before starting the farm.
  2. From Gatefront, enter the soldier camp immediately southeast of the grace. Look for the Godrick Soldiers carrying the large brass-colored triangular shields.
  3. Kill those shield bearers and check their dropped items. The shield is a random drop, so return to Gatefront, rest, and repeat if needed.
  4. The camp's spear-wielding knight carries different equipment. Farm the ordinary soldiers actually holding the brass triangular shield, then rest at Gatefront to reset them.

Notes

  • On Standard affinity, blocks 100% of the physical portion of a successfully guarded hit. You still need enough stamina to hold your guard, and elemental damage is handled separately.
  • At +0 it blocks 55% Magic, 59% Fire, 39% Lightning and 54% Holy damage. These are guarding values, rather than protection from an attack that hits around your shield.
  • Its 61 starting Guard Boost gives strong blocking efficiency for a medium shield, but the 7.0 weight and 16 Strength requirement cost more than a light heater shield.
  • The Godrick Soldiers carrying it have a 2% base drop chance at 100 Item Discovery. Resting resets those enemies, rather than guaranteeing the next kill drops a shield.
  • Has No Skill by default. In the left hand it leaves the right-hand weapon's skill available; the shield will not parry just because you press the skill input.
  • Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. A new affinity can change blocking values and Guard Boost, so the Standard-affinity percentages above do not describe every infused version.
  • Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Reinforcement improves Guard Boost and offensive power; it does not turn every elemental blocking percentage into 100%.
  • Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can temporarily improve guarding. Those shield buffs are separate from a grease or enchantment applied to your right-hand weapon.
  • Lower the shield between attacks when it is safe so stamina can recover more quickly. Full physical blocking does not stop grabs, attacks from behind or every status effect from reaching you.
  • Requires 16 Strength and weighs 7. Strength scaling affects shield attacks, rather than increasing its fixed blocking percentages.
