In-game description

Wooden shield of Stormveil soldiers. Much like the castle, it is marred by mottling and thorns.

Some say it is the curse of grafting which causes such affliction, while others talk of its root being something altogether more sinister hidden deep within the castle.

Starting Site of Grace: Rampart Tower

Before you go

  • Reach Rampart Tower in Stormveil Castle.
  1. After defeating Margit, activate Stormveil Main Gate and speak to Gostoc in the room to the left. Take his suggested side passage along the cliff.
  2. Follow the ruined wall and rocks to Stormveil Cliffside grace. Climb the stone steps into the storage building above it.
  3. Go up the wooden stairs, watching for enemies throwing fire pots at the explosive barrels. Let a throw clear the barrels from a safe distance before climbing farther.
  4. Continue up the next stairs to the dark room on the right. The door can lock behind you, leaving you with a Banished Knight.
  5. Defeat the Banished Knight and collect the Rusty Key from the corpse. Return to the locked door on the floor below and open it.
  6. Climb the ladder, follow the outside route past the next Banished Knight and go up the tower stairs to Rampart Tower grace.
  7. From Rampart Tower, leave onto the rampart with the Warhawks carrying explosive barrels. Clear them before approaching the outer edge.
  8. Follow the northern wall and look down for the ruined tower and stone ledge below the rampart. Drop onto the visible stone surface, then descend to the corpse holding Marred Wooden Shield.
  9. Stop at this pickup rather than jumping directly to the cliff below. The route farther down leads toward the Crucible Knight and requires additional careful drops.

Notes

  • Requires eight Strength and weighs four. Standard affinity blocks 92% Physical and 52% Magic damage, with 52 base Guard Boost. Fire protection is only 27%.
  • Its thorns apply 50 blood loss buildup when the shield actually hits. Blocking and rolling do not automatically damage an enemy with the thorns.
  • No Skill is fitted by default. A compatible attacking shield skill provides another way to make contact, while keeping No Skill preserves access to the right-hand weapon skill.
  • Blood affinity has an extra 100 flat Blood Loss burst damage compared with an ordinary Blood medium shield. It does not give an extra 100 buildup, and a target must still be susceptible to bleeding.
  • Arcane improves the innate bleed when an affinity supplies Arcane scaling. Reinforcing a Standard copy does not create that scaling by itself.
  • The ruined tower below the Warhawk rampart holds the corpse. Stop at the shield if you do not want the farther cliff descent toward the Crucible Knight.
  • Upgrade it with ordinary Smithing Stones to +25. The listed blocking percentages and base Guard Boost describe Standard affinity; changing affinity can trade physical protection for an element.
  • Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can improve guarding; these are defensive shield buffs rather than permission to apply ordinary offensive grease to every affinity.
