Thought to represent a surreptitious prophecy of cardinal sin, the lit candle-tree design was forbidden.

Altus Plateau

Starting Site of Grace: Sage's Cave

  1. Reach Altus Plateau with both Dectus Medallion halves, from Fort Haight and Fort Faroth, or by defeating Magma Wyrm Makar at the top of Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
  2. From Abandoned Coffin, cross the shallow lake toward the northeastern cliff and enter Sage's Cave. Activate the grace and bring a Lantern for its dark passages.
  3. Strike the wall at the first dead end. Turn right, follow the stream past the skeleton and reveal the next false wall beside the moss.
  4. Pass the two chests and descend south into the shallow water. Look left for the false wall between two small fires. Clear the skeletons behind it to reach the room with four chests.
  5. Open the four chests in this room for Candletree Wooden Shield and the other rewards. Neither boss is required.

Notes

  • Requires eight Strength and weighs 3.5. With Standard affinity it blocks 93% of Physical damage and starts with 49 Guard Boost, so a successful block still lets some HP damage through.
  • Its Standard Lightning protection is 50%, compared with 32% Fire. The candle design does not make it a Fire-resistant shield.
  • Parry is fitted by default and costs no FP. You can change to a compatible shield skill or No Skill if you want easier access to the right-hand weapon skill.
  • The shield is in Sage's Cave's four-chest room behind the wall between two small fires. Neither of the cave's bosses is required.
  • Upgrade it with ordinary Smithing Stones to +25. The listed blocking percentages and base Guard Boost describe Standard affinity; changing affinity can trade physical protection for an element.
  • Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can improve guarding; these are defensive shield buffs rather than permission to apply ordinary offensive grease to every affinity.
