Where to find
Liurnia of the Lakes
Starting Site of Grace: Debate Parlor
Before you go
- Enter Raya Lucaria Academy and defeat the Red Wolf of Radagon.
- At Temple Quarter in western Liurnia, ride north to the rocky island where Glintstone Dragon Smarag is resting. Take the Academy Glintstone Key from the corpse behind the dragon; fighting Smarag is optional.
- Examine the seal at South Raya Lucaria Gate with the key in your inventory. At Main Academy Gate, ride the lift up and climb the stairs past the two sorcerers into the church. Activate Church of the Cuckoo grace in its side passage.
- Leave through the side passage into the graveyard. Follow the descending path across the wooden bridge, then climb the path on the right. Watch for enemies grabbing at you from the ground.
- At the far end, go through the passage to the huge waterwheel. Ride an ascending platform and step off at the upper landing. Enter the building on the left for Schoolhouse Classroom grace; riding down goes to a different area.
- Leave the classroom and follow the corridor through the sorcerers to the large room with a Living Jar. Use the corridor on its right, climb the stairs and continue upstairs to the boss fog.
- Defeat Red Wolf of Radagon and activate Debate Parlor grace. Leave into the open courtyard, keeping the large curved staircase on your right in view.
- Leave Debate Parlor for the courtyard and head toward the large curved staircase on the right. Jump onto its broken support, then get onto the stairs themselves.
- Run up the staircase while watching for the large rolling ball. Step aside into the safe edges as it passes, then continue through the upper doorway into the next courtyard.
- Moongrum, Carian Knight, waits here in front of the lift to Rennala. Defeat him to receive Carian Knight's Shield. He can parry attacks, so be careful about repeatedly swinging into his raised shield.
- Collect the shield from Moongrum's defeat reward. Rennala in the library above is a different encounter and is unnecessary for this shield.
Notes
- On Standard affinity, blocks 100% of the physical portion of a successfully guarded hit. You still need enough stamina to hold your guard, and elemental damage is handled separately.
- At +0 it blocks 71% Magic, 28% Fire, 19% Lightning and 54% Holy damage. These are guarding values, rather than protection from an attack that hits around your shield.
- Blocks 71% Magic damage on Standard affinity, making Magic its strongest elemental protection. Fire blocking is only 28% and Lightning only 19%, so its glintstones do not protect equally against every spell.
- Requires 10 Strength, 10 Dexterity and 15 Intelligence. Intelligence improves its Magic attack component when used offensively, rather than increasing the percentage of Magic damage blocked.
- Strength supplies the physical attack scaling. Its split physical and Magic attack power matters for shield strikes, not a hidden multiplier to ordinary right-hand sword attacks.
- Moongrum's ability to parry does not mean the dropped shield starts with Parry or automatically reflects spells. Its default is No Skill; add a compatible shield Ash if you want an active defensive skill.
- Moongrum is a fixed reward encounter before Rennala. The shield is not a random armor drop to farm from the academy sorcerers.
- Has No Skill by default. In the left hand it leaves the right-hand weapon's skill available; the shield will not parry just because you press the skill input.
- Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. A new affinity can change blocking values and Guard Boost, so the Standard-affinity percentages above do not describe every infused version.
- Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Reinforcement improves Guard Boost and offensive power; it does not turn every elemental blocking percentage into 100%.
- Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can temporarily improve guarding. Those shield buffs are separate from a grease or enchantment applied to your right-hand weapon.
- Lower the shield between attacks when it is safe so stamina can recover more quickly. Full physical blocking does not stop grabs, attacks from behind or every status effect from reaching you.
- Weighs 4.5 and starts with 52 Guard Boost. Meeting the Intelligence requirement does not make it a casting tool.
