Before you go

  • Reach Altus Plateau and bring 3,800 runes.
  1. Reach Altus Plateau through the Grand Lift of Dectus or the Ruin-Strewn Precipice route.
  2. Follow the road to Altus Highway Junction, then take the northern branch uphill.
  3. Continue north along the main road past the map stele toward the enormous broken bridge. Climb onto its intact southern section and activate Forest-Spanning Greatbridge grace.
  4. Find the merchant at the campfire on the eastern side of the bridge near the Finger Reader and sending gate. Buy Crossed-Tree Towershield for 3,800 runes. There is one copy in stock.

Notes

  • A greatshield requiring 30 Strength and weighing 15.5. Standard affinity gives a full physical block and 71 base Guard Boost.
  • Its best elemental protection is Fire and Holy at 66% each. Magic is 56% and Lightning 53%, so elemental damage still gets through a successful block.
  • Shield Bash is the default skill and costs 10 FP. Can use compatible Ashes of War; No Skill is useful if you want immediate access to your right-hand weapon skill.
  • Standard shield attacks scale with Strength. The crossed trees give no passive regeneration, Erdtree spell boost or Faith requirement.
  • The bridge merchant sells one for 3,800 runes. It is a purchase rather than a rare enemy drop, and the nearby sending gate is not needed to open the shop.
  • Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Defensive Shield Grease or a compatible shield-buff spell can improve guarding separately from offensive weapon coatings. Reinforcement does not remove chip damage from an incompletely blocked damage type.
