Starting Site of Grace: Murkwater Cave

Before you go

Enter the river north of Agheel Lake and follow it to Murkwater Cave in the western cliff. If Nerijus invades outside, deal with that encounter before entering.
Activate the cave grace, clear the bandits and enter the room with the chest. Opening the chest triggers Patches' fight.
Stop attacking when Patches surrenders. Finish his dialogue, rest or reload Murkwater Cave, then return and speak to him to open his shop.
Buy Horse Crest Wooden Shield for 1,000 runes. If he has already moved, use his current shop instead; if he has died, offer his bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks for remaining unlocked stock.

A medium shield requiring 8 Strength and weighing 3.5. Standard physical protection is 93%, so small amounts of physical damage still get through guarded hits.
Has 49 base Guard Boost. Magic is its best elemental guard at 50%, followed by Lightning 43%, Holy 42% and Fire 32%.
No Skill is the default and leaves your right-hand weapon skill available. Can use compatible Ashes of War to add a shield skill.
Standard shield attacks scale with Strength. The horse crest gives no mounted-damage bonus, extra Torrent health or improved mounted guarding.
Patches sells one for 1,000 runes after you spare him and reopen his shop. His later moves change where you buy it; his bell bearing preserves remaining unlocked shop stock if he dies.
Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Defensive Shield Grease or a compatible shield-buff spell can improve guarding separately from offensive weapon coatings. Reinforcement does not remove chip damage from an incompletely blocked damage type.
