Greatshields boast high damage negation and guard capacity, making enemy attacks easy to repel.
Skill

Compatible Ashes of War (7)
These Ashes of War can be applied to this weapon.
Where to find
Siofra River
Starting Site of Grace: Nokron, Eternal City
Before you go
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn and enter Nokron through the Mistwood crater.
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle. Return to the new crater near Fort Haight in southern Mistwood, marked by floating rocks, and descend its ledges into Nokron.
- Follow the rooftops into the ruined building. Drop carefully to the lower floor by its left wall and go through the doorway to Nokron, Eternal City grace.
- Leave Nokron, Eternal City grace into the courtyard with the gazebo. Find the helmeted Fallen Hawk Soldiers carrying the large inverted-hawk shields between this courtyard and the descending stairs.
- Defeat those shield carriers, collect glowing drops and rest at the city grace to repeat. The greatshield has a 1% base chance at 100 Discovery; Mimic Tear is farther along and unnecessary.
Notes
- Requires 30 Strength and weighs 15.5. Standard affinity blocks 100% Physical damage and starts with 70 Guard Boost.
- Magic and Holy protection are both 66%, Fire is 56% and Lightning is 54%. Its large size does not provide 100% protection against all damage types.
- Shield Bash costs 10 FP by default and can be replaced with another compatible greatshield skill or No Skill. Its inverted hawk crest supplies no separate passive effect.
- Greatshield-carrying Fallen Hawk Soldiers outside Nokron's first grace have a 1% base drop chance at 100 Discovery. Their other weapons and the nearby Silver Tears are not equivalent targets.
- Radahn must be defeated to open Nokron's crater, but Mimic Tear and the ancestral brazier puzzles are unnecessary for this early-city farm.
- The graveyard-style enemies are soldiers rather than reviving skeletons. Collect their ordinary glowing drops and rest to reset them; no finishing strike on glowing bones is needed.
- Upgrade it with ordinary Smithing Stones to +25. The listed blocking percentages and base Guard Boost describe Standard affinity; changing affinity can trade physical protection for an element.
- Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can improve guarding; these are defensive shield buffs rather than permission to apply ordinary offensive grease to every affinity.
