Before you go

To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
Access the Realm of Shadow.

From the opening Gravesite Plain, head north past Scorched Ruins to Three-Path Cross. Follow the road northeast across Ellac Greatbridge, avoiding the ballista fire, and activate Castle Front at the far end.
Enter the nearby camp and target the Messmer Soldiers carrying the broad metal shields. Defeat them and collect their glowing drops.
Rest at Castle Front to repeat. Their shield has a 2% base chance at 100 Discovery and is separate from their armor and weapon rolls.

Requires 10 Strength and weighs five. Standard affinity blocks 100% Physical damage and starts with 59 Guard Boost.
Standard Magic, Fire, Lightning and Holy protection are all 43%. Full physical protection does not prevent elemental chip damage, status buildup or a guard break when stamina runs out.
No Skill is fitted by default, leaving the right-hand skill available. Compatible defensive or parry Ashes can replace it.
Shield-carrying Messmer Soldiers have a 2% base drop chance at 100 Discovery. Their axe, spear and armor are separate loot rolls.
The Castle Front camp is available without defeating Rellana, the Golden Hippopotamus or Messmer. Common foot soldiers with different equipment are not the same shield target.
Upgrade it with ordinary Smithing Stones to +25. The listed blocking percentages and base Guard Boost describe Standard affinity; changing affinity can trade physical protection for an element.
Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can improve guarding; these are defensive shield buffs rather than permission to apply ordinary offensive grease to every affinity.
