Before you go

Reach Altus Plateau through Dectus or Ruin-Strewn Precipice and follow the eastern highway through the capital outskirts to Outer Wall Battleground.
Head northwest along the northern outskirts road to the isolated shack beneath the cliffs. Activate Hermit Merchant's Shack and rest until daytime if the merchant is absent.
Rest at Hermit Merchant's Shack and pass time until nightfall. Ride east up the hill toward the ruins west of the nearby Minor Erdtree.
Approach the ruined stonework to make the Deathbird appear. Defeat it to receive the shield. The Bell Bearing Hunter at the shack is a separate night encounter.

Requires 12 Strength and weighs 4.5. Standard affinity blocks all Physical damage from a successful guarded hit and starts with 55 Guard Boost. Lightning protection is much lower at 28%.
At 20% maximum HP or lower, it raises attack power by 5% and reduces incoming damage by 10%. The bonus ends when your HP rises above that threshold.
The passive works while the shield is selected, including on your back while two-handing the other weapon. It does not require blocking or attacking with the shield.
Stacks with Red-Feathered Branchsword for 26% more attack power while both conditions are met. With Blue-Feathered Branchsword, their damage reductions combine to 55%, rather than adding to 60%. Staying at such low HP still leaves very little room for mistakes.
No Skill is fitted by default. Can use compatible shield Ashes of War without losing the low-HP passive, and ordinary Smithing Stones upgrade it to +25.
The nighttime Deathbird east of Hermit Merchant's Shack guarantees the shield. The Bell Bearing Hunter that appears at the shack is a separate boss with a different reward.
