In-game description

A finely-made "blueshield" featuring an engraving of a wolf under the moon. Excels at fending off sorceries.

The wolf is the beast of the Carian royal covenant; a symbol of the moon's pride that none can forget, no matter what remote lands they may arrive in.

Starting Site of Grace: Castle Ensis Checkpoint

Before you go

  • To enter the Realm of Shadow, defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm in Mohg's arena at Mohgwyn Palace.
  • Pass the checkpoint gate and reach Moonrithyll's courtyard.
  1. From Castle Front, cross the northeastern bridge toward Castle Ensis. Pass or defeat the Troll Knight at the far end, then climb the large stairs on the left.
  2. Follow the path left at the top. Soldiers and dogs wait around the fires and stairway, so draw them out before climbing farther.
  3. Continue through the cave beyond the first campfire. Climb the ledges at its far exit, then follow the uphill path past the patrolling Black Knight.
  4. At the top is a closed gate with Miquella's Cross beside it. Activate Castle Ensis Checkpoint grace before attempting the detour.
  5. With the closed gate ahead, follow the wall to the right to the soldier crouching at the ledge. Drop to the ledge below, then into the hole leading to the flooded cave. Three dogs attack inside.
  6. Leave the cave and turn left toward the waterfall. Jump across the rock platforms, continue through the river arch and climb the ladder beside the falling water.
  7. Enter the room at the top, watching for an ambush on the left. Cross to the gate mechanism and turn it to open the shortcut back to Checkpoint grace.
  8. Climb the stairs and cross the guarded bridge. Continue past the dog ambush and spellcasting nobles to the stairs leading up toward the chapel.
  9. Moonrithyll, Carian Knight guards the chapel entrance. Defeat him or move past him carefully; the shield stairs and chapel altar are separate pickups here.
  10. Before entering the chapel, use the descending stairs on the western side of the courtyard, opposite the stairs you climbed.
  11. Follow them into the lower storeroom and open the chest beside the fireplace for Wolf Crest Shield.

Notes

  • Requires 12 Strength and weighs 6. On Standard affinity it blocks 100% Physical, 63% Magic, 38% Fire, 42% Lightning and 40% Holy damage from a successfully guarded hit.
  • Its Magic protection is useful against sorceries, but it still lets some Magic damage through. Fire is its weakest elemental protection.
  • Its initial Guard Boost is 59. Blocking costs stamina, and running out breaks your guard; full Physical blocking does not make an exhausted guard safe.
  • Its default No Skill leaves your right-hand weapon's skill available while the shield is held in the left hand. Fit a parry or another compatible shield skill if you want the shield to use the skill button instead.
  • Upgrade it with Smithing Stones to +25. Can use compatible shield Ashes of War, and compatible shield enchantments can improve it temporarily.
  • Infusing it changes its damage protection and Guard Boost. The percentages above describe Standard affinity, rather than every possible infusion.
  • The shield is in a chest below the courtyard. Moonrithyll drops his sword separately, and Rellana's later boss fight is not required.
