In-game description
A small metal roundshield. The bump in the center is designed to parry.
A well-timed parry deflects an enemy's attack, breaking their stance and leaving them open to a critical hit. Though risk is inherent, this shield favors aggression.
Skill
Buckler ParryFP 0 · Ash of War, changeable
Use this skill in time with a foe's melee attack to deflect it and break that foe's stance. This is faster than a regular parry.
Compatible Ashes of War (12)
These Ashes of War can be applied to this weapon.

Starting Site of Grace: Stormveil Main Gate
Before you go
- 1,500 runes.
- Defeat Margit and follow the entrance tunnel to Stormveil Main Gate grace. Gostoc is in the gatehouse room on the left of the closed main entrance.
- Speak to him about entering the castle. Asking for the main gate to be opened does not force you to use it; the cliffside route remains available.
- Return to Gostoc and open his shop once available. If you followed the side route and he is not selling yet, progress to the Rusty Key room in the outer wall and return before defeating Godrick.
- Buy Buckler for 1,500 runes.
- If you have already defeated Godrick and Gostoc is not selling, keep him alive and progress Nepheli's quest. Give her The Stormhawk King, rather than Seluvis's Potion, and defeat Morgott in Leyndell.
- Return to Godrick's grace, finish Gostoc's dialogue and rest or reload the area. Once Nepheli has moved into the throne room beyond the arena, speak to Gostoc at the back to use his later shop.
- If Gostoc is already dead, give his bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. His remaining early equipment can be bought there; previously bought limited stock does not refill.
Notes
- Needs 8 Strength and 13 Dexterity and weighs 1.5. Bandit starts with one; other classes can buy one from Gostoc for 1,500 runes.
- Buckler Parry is its innate skill and costs no FP. Its short recovery is a property of that skill, rather than a universal improvement to every parry Ash of War placed on this shield.
- Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Replacing the innate skill also replaces Buckler Parry; removing the replacement restores the shield's original skill.
- A parry must meet a parryable attack at the right time. It is not an ordinary block, and some bosses require several successful parries before a critical opening.
- On Standard affinity it blocks 74% of physical damage, so physical chip damage can still get through. Its Lightning protection is only 16%, compared with 30% for Magic, Fire and Holy.
- Its starting Guard Boost is 45, which governs stamina lost while blocking. That is separate from damage negation, and raising it does not turn a partial block into a 100% physical shield.
- Upgrade it with Smithing Stones to +25. Reinforcement improves its shield properties but does not lengthen Buckler Parry's timing window.
