In-game description

Pillory made to punish serious felons, used as a shield. Though made of good, sturdy wood, it is only a makeshift tool and performs as such.

Perhaps due to its use as a device with which the guilty were made to endure prolonged suffering, it raises vitality.

Caelid

Starting Site of Grace: Gaol Cave

Before you go

  • Bring two Stonesword Keys to enter Gaol Cave.
  1. From Fort Gael North in Caelid, head southeast to the small scarlet rot pool east of the fort. Search the pool's southern cliff for Gaol Cave. Use two Stonesword Keys at its imp seal, then activate the grace inside.
  2. Follow the tunnels past the rats until the weak floor gives way. Drop into the lower prison passage. The cells are locked for now; one lever opens them together later.
  3. Continue past the wooden door and the militia ambush. Drop from the small ledge, watching for another militia fighter below. In the room with the guarded large metal gate, take the tunnel on the right instead of trying to open the gate.
  4. Pass the rats and enter the room with bookshelves and a chest. Clear the militia fighters on the lower floor, watch for the one above, then climb the stairs and pull the lever. This opens the cells and metal gate.
  5. The released burning prisoners can swell up and explode. Give them room and move away when they start to swell. Use the wooden door downstairs to return to the ledge beside the Stake of Marika.
  6. Before dropping from the Stake of Marika ledge, search the newly opened cell to the north. It contains two corpses: one holds an Old Fang and the other holds Pillory Shield.

Notes

  • Raises Vitality by 50 while equipped in an active hand. Vitality resists Death Blight buildup; it does not increase maximum HP or your Vigor attribute.
  • The bonus does not protect against every ailment. It does not improve resistance to poison, rot, sleep or madness, and it neither cures existing Death Blight buildup nor makes you immune.
  • Requires 10 Strength and weighs 3.5, which is fairly heavy for a small shield. Standard affinity blocks 82% of physical damage, so some damage gets through even when you block successfully.
  • Its base Guard Boost is 50. Fire is its weakest elemental protection at 23%; using it against a Fire attack leaves much more damage to reach your HP.
  • Has No Skill by default, leaving the right-hand weapon's skill available. Can use compatible shield Ashes of War, including Parry. Changing affinity can also change its guarding tradeoffs.
  • Upgrade it with Smithing Stones to +25. Reinforcement improves its guarding performance, but does not increase the 50-point Vitality bonus.
  • The shield is a cell pickup after opening the prison lever. Defeating the Frenzied Duelist is not required.
