Its emblem is an ancient thorn design. Though it isn't much, it boosts fire damage negation.

Weeping Peninsula

Starting Site of Grace: Castle Morne Rampart

Before you go

  • Have 600 runes.
  1. Cross the Bridge of Sacrifice into the Weeping Peninsula and follow the main road south toward Castle Morne.
  2. Stop at Castle Morne Rampart grace, beside the broken defensive wall, and find the merchant seated nearby.
  3. Buy Red Thorn Roundshield for 600 runes. The merchant sells one, separately from Samurai's starting copy. Leonine Misbegotten and the Castle Morne quest are unnecessary.

Notes

  • A small shield weighing just 1.5 and requiring 8 Strength. It favors a low equipment load and parrying over sustained blocking, with 81% physical guard and 47 base Guard Boost on Standard.
  • Standard Fire protection is 42%, Lightning and Holy are 37%, and Magic is 32%. The thorns give no innate Blood Loss, retaliatory damage or rolling damage.
  • Parry is the default. You still need to time it against an attack that can be parried; the shield does not counter every swing, spell or grab.
  • Can use compatible Ashes of War. Its Standard shield attacks scale with Strength, rather than Dexterity because Samurai starts with it.
  • Samurai begins with a copy, and the Castle Morne Rampart merchant sells a separate one for 600 runes. No Castle Morne boss or quest is required for the shop.
  • Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Defensive Shield Grease or a compatible shield-buff spell can improve guarding separately from offensive weapon coatings. Reinforcement does not remove chip damage from an incompletely blocked damage type.
