Starting Site of Grace: Coastal Cave

Before you go

Use the sloping route from the First Step down to the western beach. Do not jump straight from the high cliff.
Follow the shore southeast from Coastal Cave to the merchant sitting beside his campfire.
Speak to the merchant at the beach campfire and buy Iron Roundshield for 900 runes. You do not need to enter Coastal Cave or fight its bosses.

A small shield requiring 8 Strength and weighing 3. Standard affinity blocks 88% physical damage with 51 base Guard Boost.
Magic, Fire and Holy guarding are 42% each, while Lightning is only 18%. Its metal construction does not mean it blocks all physical damage or guards every element equally.
No Skill is the default. Despite its small-shield classification, it does not come with Parry already installed. Can use compatible Ashes of War to change that role.
Standard shield attacks scale with Strength. A heavier small shield is not automatically a better defensive choice than a medium shield with full physical protection.
The western-beach merchant sells one for 900 runes. Coastal Cave's bosses and the island beyond the cave are unnecessary for the purchase.
Upgrade with Smithing Stones to +25. Defensive Shield Grease or a compatible shield-buff spell can improve guarding separately from offensive weapon coatings. Reinforcement does not remove chip damage from an incompletely blocked damage type.
