In-game description
A small, wooden roundshield. It is light and easy to handle, but cannot offer the damage negation of a metal shield.
An ancient cipher engraving lines the circumference. Though it isn't much, it boosts holy damage negation.
Skill
Use this skill in time with a foe's melee attack to deflect it and break that foe's stance. This provides an opening to perform a critical hit.Ash of War: Parry
Compatible Ashes of War (12)
These Ashes of War can be applied to this weapon.
Where to find
Before you go
- Choose Astrologer as your starting class.
- The Astrologer starts with this shield.
Limgrave
Starting Site of Grace: Deathtouched Catacombs
- From Saintsbridge in northern Limgrave, follow the road west uphill. Before the roadside camp, take the slope on your right to the higher cliffside ledge.
- Look for the double doors with a seated spirit beside them. Open the doors, go inside Deathtouched Catacombs and activate the grace.
- Descend toward the sealed boss door, then take the stairs to the left into the skeleton rooms. Hit fallen skeletons again while they begin glowing to stop them reassembling.
- Defeat the scimitar-and-small-shield skeletons in these early rooms and strike their glowing remains. Collect their dropped loot, then rest to repeat. The shield has a 2% base chance at 100 Discovery.
Notes
- Requires eight Strength and weighs 1.5. Standard affinity blocks 82% Physical damage and starts with 47 Guard Boost, while Fire protection is only 22%.
- Parry is fitted by default and costs no FP. The religious writing does not make this a casting tool or add Faith scaling to your spells.
- Astrologer starts with it. Other classes can farm the small-shield skeletons in Deathtouched Catacombs, with a 2% base drop chance at 100 Discovery.
- Strike the fallen skeletons' glowing remains so they stay down long enough to finish the loot run. Resting resets them afterward.
- The Black Knife Assassin and Deathroot chest are separate rewards. Neither is required to farm the shield in the early rooms.
- Upgrade it with ordinary Smithing Stones to +25. The listed blocking percentages and base Guard Boost describe Standard affinity; changing affinity can trade physical protection for an element.
- Can use compatible shield Ashes of War. Shield Grease or Scholar's Shield can improve guarding; these are defensive shield buffs rather than permission to apply ordinary offensive grease to every affinity.
