In-game description

A flail with two additional bludgeoning heads.

Weapon of the Night's Cavalry who ride funeral steeds.

The large spikes make it highly effective at inducing blood loss, but also demand higher dexterity to wield.

LocationRoad beside Castle Morne Rampart

Weeping Peninsula

Starting Site of Grace: Castle Morne Rampart

Before you go

  • Visit at night.
  1. From Agheel Lake South, follow the southern road over Bridge of Sacrifice into the Weeping Peninsula. Watch for the ballista at the far end of the bridge.
  2. Continue south along the main road past Castle Morne Rampart grace toward the castle on the coast. Avoid the giant archer's shots on the exposed final approach.
  3. Activate Castle Morne Rampart grace beside the road near the merchant. Rest and pass time until night, then look for the black mounted rider patrolling nearby.
  4. Defeat this Night's Cavalry rider to receive Nightrider Flail and Barricade Shield. Killing the horse only knocks the rider down; the encounter ends when the rider is defeated.
  5. After a failed attempt, set the time to night again if the rider is absent. Castle Morne's interior and Leonine Misbegotten are unnecessary for this road encounter.

Notes

  • With Standard affinity, physical damage scales most strongly with Dexterity, with weaker Strength scaling.
  • Upgrade it with Smithing Stones. Its maximum upgrade is +25.
  • Can use compatible Ashes of War. Your choice of skill and the whetblades you've found determine which affinities you can apply.
  • Grease or a weapon enchantment can be applied while using an affinity that allows weapon buffs.
  • Its normal weapon hits build up blood loss. The effect only triggers against enemies that are vulnerable to it.
  • Requires 10 Strength and 24 Dexterity and weighs 6. Its high Dexterity requirement remains necessary while two-handing, and Keen develops its Dexterity focus.
  • Has 50 innate Blood Loss buildup and ordinary Strike attacks. It combines a blunt damage type with bleed without requiring a heavy Strength weapon.
  • Ordinary flail attacks cannot be parried. That does not make the weapon unblockable or guarantee that a replacement skill is unparryable too.
  • Starts with Spinning Chain: 8 FP for the spinning action, with 8 FP for the light finisher or 10 FP for the heavy finisher. It is a close-range skill, so the spinning heads need contact.
  • Spinning Chain has no transferable Ash. Keeping that original skill means keeping Standard affinity; a replacement Ash lets you use another affinity but changes the skill.
  • Keen uses a slightly weaker Dexterity modifier for some separate Keen, Quality, Lightning and Cold skill projectiles. This is separate from its strong Keen melee damage.
  • Standard has no Arcane scaling. Blood, Poison and Occult can make Arcane improve its retained innate bleed, with different damage and buildup tradeoffs.
  • It has no special hidden mounted damage bonus. Its Night's Cavalry owner and the weapon's name do not give it the mounted bonus associated with Nightrider Glaive.
  • If you die during a night attempt, pass time until night again before looking for the rider. Killing only the horse is not enough; defeat the rider for the weapon and Barricade Shield reward.
