Altus Plateau
Starting Site of Grace: Abandoned Coffin
Before you go
- Reach Altus Plateau.
- Reach Altus Plateau through the Grand Lift of Dectus, using the medallion halves from Fort Haight and Fort Faroth, or by defeating Magma Wyrm Makar at the top of Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
- The precipice exit leads straight into the broken-carriage field beside Abandoned Coffin grace. If you arrived by the lift, follow the road west toward that field and activate the grace.
- Look northeast from the grace for an Omen on a wrecked carriage and another walking along the path. Target the ones carrying the large bent, double-headed axe.
- Pull one away from the other, defeat it and collect its dropped loot. Rest at Abandoned Coffin to bring the enemies back and repeat until the axe drops.
Notes
- With Standard affinity, physical damage scales only with Strength. Dexterity is a requirement, with no damage scaling on that affinity. Heavy further emphasizes Strength; Cold, Blood and Poison also keep a strong Strength contribution.
- Cold, Blood and Poison give it the larger status buildup normally used by greataxes. It has no innate status buildup, so Standard or Heavy does not cause bleed just because the blade looks battered. Arcane can improve bleed or poison when the selected affinity gives the weapon Arcane scaling; it does not increase frost buildup.
- The light attack chain speeds up after the opening swing. Its second charged heavy attack hits twice, with more damage arriving on the second hit. That gives repeated-hit effects more opportunities to build, but also leaves you committed for longer.
- Comes with War Cry, costing 16 FP for a 40-second weapon buff. It improves physical damage and Strength scaling, and changes the heavy attacks. Applying another weapon coating or putting the weapon away ends that buff.
- Roar Medallion and a Highland Axe held in the other active hand improve the heavy attacks changed by War Cry. Shard of Alexander does not boost those attacks, because the roar enables ordinary heavy attacks rather than dealing the hit itself.
- Heavy affinity has an unusual drawback for skills whose damage is calculated separately from weapon attack power, such as Ground Slam and Flame of the Redmanes: their Strength contribution is slightly weaker than on a typical Heavy weapon. This does not reduce the axe's ordinary Strength scaling or apply to every Ash of War.
- Requires 24 Strength and 8 Dexterity, weighs 7.5 and has a normal critical rating of 100. Two-handing meets its Strength requirement at 16 Strength, but does not lower the Dexterity requirement.
- Can use compatible Ashes of War and upgrades with Smithing Stones to +25. Grease or a weapon enchantment can be applied with Standard, Heavy, Keen or Quality affinity. Elemental and status affinities prevent ordinary weapon coatings.
- Axe-carrying Omen have a 4% base drop chance at 100 Item Discovery. The cleaver-carrying Omen have a different weapon drop. Higher Item Discovery helps the random drop, rather than making every Omen give an axe.
