Scarlet rot is an old legend, of which Maleigh Marais of the Shaded Castle was a private believer. And indeed, he eventually found his own personal goddess.

Altus Plateau

Starting Site of Grace: Erdtree-Gazing Hill

Before you go

  • Reach Altus Plateau.
  1. From Erdtree-Gazing Hill in Altus Plateau, ride east down into the valley, then follow it north between the cliffs. Stay on the lower ground rather than climbing toward Mt. Gelmir's campsites.
  2. When you reach the castle swamp, go around the outside to the west instead of climbing inside. Find Maleigh Marais on the open ground west of the walls, near the giant golem.
  3. Defeat Maleigh for the mask and robe. You do not need to defeat Elemer inside the castle for these two pieces, and the golem is not the opponent that drops them.
  4. Collect Antspur Rapier with the mask and robe. This outdoor human opponent supplies the weapon; the nearby golem does not.

Notes

  • With Standard affinity, physical damage scales most strongly with Dexterity, with weaker Strength scaling.
  • Upgrade this rapier with Smithing Stones, up to +25.
  • Its attacks build up Scarlet Rot. The enemy still needs to be vulnerable to rot for it to trigger.
  • You can replace its Ash of War with a compatible one. A buff-compatible affinity also lets you apply grease or a weapon enchantment.
  • Blood affinity adds blood loss while keeping Scarlet Rot. Poison adds poison, and Cold adds frost buildup. The listed rot buildup is 55 on Standard and 50 on Cold, Poison, Blood and Occult.
  • For three statuses, use Poisonous Mist with Blood affinity, or Seppuku with Poison affinity. Activate the skill to add its temporary coating alongside the innate rot and the affinity's status. A Blood or Poison affinity alone does not give all three.
  • Those skill coatings are different from ordinary grease or spell buffs. Grease and weapon enchantments still require a compatible affinity; adding Arcane scaling does not make Scarlet Rot buildup scale with Arcane.
  • Rot Grease adds to its innate rot buildup while using Standard, Heavy, Keen or Quality affinity. This is a temporary coating, not a way to make Scarlet Rot scale with Arcane.
  • The Poison Flower Blooms Twice can clear an enemy's existing Poison or Scarlet Rot for an extra burst of damage. Using it means choosing that immediate hit over the remaining damage over time; afterward you need to inflict the status again.
  • Its short blade makes spacing important. The thrusts work from behind a raised shield, but each attack still spends stamina that you may need for blocking.
  • Maleigh also drops Marais Mask and Marais Robe. His guaranteed rewards are separate from the golem nearby and Elemer inside Shaded Castle.
